Does This Look Cleaned To You???

I got this 1812 Bust Half back from PCGS as Genuine, AU Details, cleaned. No hairlines,
some uneven toning....maybe they didn't like that... What do you all think?? TIA Harvey

  • Yes, from these pics, even bright, with the most common retone color (or your white balance is offimage ).

Edit to add: It has what I would call "secondary" skin, esp Obv.

Obverse looks to smooth no luster but enough detail that I would say cleaned as well.

No offense, but the obverse looks like it had a light sand blast.
The rim damage is obvious to the eye.
The reverse still has some luster left and a nice strike.
I hope you didn't put too much money in her.

Yes. But if it weren't they would have cited rim damage I think.

This coin has more issues than just a cleaning.

The rim damage may be from edge lettering. Nonetheless, I agree it looks over dipped and lifeless, particularly the obverse.

Yes, it appears to be cleaned. There were over 100,000 Bust halves in the Economite Hoard (Google it if you're not familiar with it), and supposedly all of them were cleaned. Of course, many other Busties have been cleaned over the years as well.

Surfaces definitely look off on the obverse. That said, I don't think the rim bumps are enough to preclude a straight grade.

Yupp, it's still a really cool coin though!
  • Those aren't rim bumps, edge lettering bleeding over to the rims...

I normally don't comment on silver because I don't collect it and don't have a lot of exposure to critiquing condition, however, the coin doesn’t look like it has any life left to it. The variations in color, the hairlines on the reverse, and the rim damage cut down on the desirability of the coin. It’s always a big let down to admire a coin and then come to the realization it’s not what it seems. Been there with a lot of raw Lincolns I’ve bought in the past.

Edited to answer your thread question - yes, it does look cleaned.
