    I disagree. Potential buyers of such an item will be the judge of what it is worth.

    True. I have, however, produced some "error" coins which I've sold. Like a few double-over-struck "1816" Capped Bust half dollars, for example.
    While not technically "error" coins, each was struck a second time off-center to obliterate a rim flaw that was visible after the first centered over-strike.
    So they weren't technically "errors", but they weren't pre-planned either.
