Ever experience this...........

I'm sure many of you have. I visited a tiny B&M sorta off the beaten path, been by there before but never had the chance to stop in.
There was no excuse today, a little drizzle and a spot right in front, perfect for a B&M visit. It was sorta like walking into an old hardware store,
creaky wooden floors, the smell of sweet pipe tobacco, just had that feel good feel, warm n welcome and no pressure. You know I spent 90 straight minutes talking coins with him and his wife over coffee. Everything from 09SVDBs to CBHs to Seated material, to Morgans, to the Treasury release, to collecting before the TPGs of the mid 80's etc.. It was the best numismatic experience I've ever had. Not only did we talk coins, but I may have landed a coin photo gig. He needs some help moving material and I was quick to log into my PB account to show him some examples. It would be such a thrill to shot everything from Bust coinage to Morgans. To top this all off, I had the privilege of holding a 1857 proof Seated dollar in a PR63 ANACS holder, what a piece of art that baby was. It was the most beautiful coin I've ever held. Today was a great day,
Scott

Sounds like you had a great experience. I personally never had that nice of an experience
but have had quite a few nice visits at some shops.

You mean the shop owner didn't try to cheat you or anything? You must have been doing it wrong. image
  • I had had zero exposure to coins prior to my folks passing. There were so many! And I didn't know what I had, or what I should do? I ended up taking one of each type to a little place called "Debbies" on the Parks Hwy. in Alaska.

And (my very first) experience with a B&M dealer was much like your experience today. Old guy. Small shop. He spent hours with me! He showed me some of his favorite coins... And then he patiently lead me through the basics. "First, you'll need this red book." "Don't sell anything, to anybody, until you've checked it against the book." "You live in Hawaii? "When you get home, you'll have to keep them safe from the humidity." "Find someone you can trust." etc. etc.

That is a very cool story! I relive that in my mind as you describe the shop from my youth... Oh those missed opportunity's that were in the glass topped cabinets...
Glad that you had that awesome experience...

So, what did you buy? After spending 90 minutes of the dealer's time I assume you at least made a courtesy purchase.

That is kind of what I was thinking, I would sure want to keep that shop in business. I never had the pleasure of having a coin shop around that good.

Bought a few raw Morgans for the Dansco and a 7070, gonna take the plunge and start a type set.
Also picked up some nice 40% Blue pack Ikes. I'll be going back for sure.

    Great story,and thanks for sharing.
  • That's a great story. I love places like that, with the old time feel. I seek taverns like that... You always walk away feeling good...as long as you don't try to sell them something you are proud ofimage

Ever experience this........... Yes I have.
I don't get to the B&M much either.
If it's slow, he'll open the vault and show me the "good stuff", that I'll probably never be able to swing.
He tells me about the glory days of business in days past.
Also chat about hunting, fishing, rifles, etc...

I've actually always enjoyed positive B&M experiences as well. Sounds like a great time -- glad you found some things to buy and will be going back. I'm sure the dealer appreciated your business as well!
