Heritage Question

Does anyone know at what point in terms of value that Heritage sends coins registered mail. After paying for shipping and "handling" of $25 my coins from a recent auction arrived in a damaged priority mail package. I opened it with trepidation as the package with multiple coins represented $2000 in coins. I was shocked and also very worried when opening the package. Luckily all the coins were fine, but my heart stopped for a moment. Did I do something wrong and accidentally not request specific shipping?

I've never received registered mail from Heritage. I don't think they use it.

  • I doubt that Heritage sends any coins through registered mail. They are privately insured and it is cheaper to send via Fedex or USPS Priority Mail...

image The slow speed and extra packaging requirements of registered mail have driven away most large volume shippers.

I usually receive them in USPS express mail. I just received one coin from HA last week that used USPS express mail.

I would expect at least signature confirmation when the package is worth 2K. I guess I am wrong. What about "BIG" coins? I am a small fish for them, but others buy enough to get the 15 percent rate. How do they ship those coins?

I have in my account ,with Heritage, to send all of my purchases via registered mail. I pay for the extra cost. A few years ago before I did this they sent an extremely hard to find item via priority mail. I was horrified ,so I have the instructions to only ship registered on my account.

I do the same, and for the same reason.

They always seem to come FedEx. Not sure what you are worried about. Heritage will cover it if anything goes wrong. I have never heard of anyone having a problem with Heritage. I have heard of some people getting the wrong coins, and some getting lost. But never of anyone getting stuck with something because of elements out of their control.

Sometimes the item won is worth far more to the buyer than the money spent to acquire it. Receiving financial compensation if something gets lost is fine, but it's little recompense when the unique or impossible-to-find item never shows up. If you buy nothing but top pop, rare variety, pedigreed, or "plate" coins, you might see this differently than the guy who mostly buys midgrade common-date stuff.

    From the Heritage website:

NOTE: Our shipping charges include shipping, handling and private carrier insurance. Shipping varies according to the item type, quantity, and value (for insurance purposes). Certain packages may cost more to ship and insure and you may be contacted if there are additional costs after receipt of shipment. All charges are based on shipping within the continental United States, and shipments to other areas will likely incur a higher charge. If you still have questions, please complete the form below and we will get back to you with the answers you need, or call our customer service department at 1-800-872-6467.

It look like Heritage is reserving the right to ship as they wish. I would imagine you might be able to contact them and make special arrangements if you wanted to.

Unless you think Heritage damaged the package, wouldn't your concern be with the post office?
  • Just be happy it's not firearms, which typically take 1-2 months to arrive after the auction.
