I am sorry to hear that, it never seems to amaze me why so many people keep collections like this at home.

Today, not this magnitude, but a lady who has been spending like 5k a week for the past 5 weeks buying silver bullion came in today and told me somebody broke in thier home while they were at church and took all the silver she had aquired over the past 2 months , something like 300 eagles, 250 face of halves , 200 face of quarters, and several various gold coins.
  • That makes me sick. Makes me remember how it felt when mine were taken ... and mine were mostly widgets.
Let's try not to get upset.

  • This is why I have a 9mm + .40 hand guns and a shotgun in my place. With lots of ammo and I always keep my expensive coins in my bank vault (not one even near my place either...that would be to obvious) they NEVER EVER come out of there. The guns are for those thinking of robbing me. I have a trigger finger happy hand so they would not last long!!! Plus I have my black belt in Karate and Aikido. Oh yes and a bullet proof vest as well!!!

First thing a robber will see walking threw my door is pure lead at FULL blast. Plus I work from home always so I am always here.

Is it just me or is there a different coin/bullion related crime everyday here on the CU?

  • I always had to hear these stories and feel they are becoming all the more common around our hobby. I hope they catch these people and put them out there for everyone to see. Many people keep valuables in their homes where they are suppose to feel safe, but of course, in today's world there really is no "safe" environment for our collectables let alone everything else.

I wish the person(s) who lost there collection luck and hopefully a quick recovery.

I'd like to see the crook try to dump some of the more distinctive coins from the list onto the market. These will draw attention, and might just result in an arrest.

I'll laugh in a couple of days when a new member with 0 posts shows up on this forum, and in broken English with poor spelling, wants to know what his uber-rare type coins are worth, because they were...ummm... found in an attic in grandpappy's house?

Wouldn't a full set of Morgans in high grade be worth at least a few hundred K or more just by themselves?

Thank you MsMorrisine for listifying the stolen inventory - that's very helpful!

I know there are far too many coin thievery of all types, from residential to coin shops to coin shows to inventory stolen on the way home from a show. I think posting these notices is important to let the numismatic community know about stolen items in case they might come across some of them and can notify the listed authorities. It also helps to remind all us coin enthusiasts to be diligent wherever we are.

BTW did they ever get the guys who jerked a guy's safe out of his house and right thru a wall in the Columbus, Ohio area around Xmas time a few years ago? IIRC he had some pricey Morgans in that safe.

  • Hi All,

These were my father's coins he moved out to CA from mass to enjoy the
good weather the remaining time he has on this planet. His health is not
well he has heart problems and has had minor strokes. He was safe
guarding them for my stepmother (his wife of many years) and her family
i hope this doesn't haunt him the rest of his life. He really loved
looking at these coins and i hope one day he can enjoy these coins once
again. Anyone that may come in contact with these coins please contact
authorities. They were not insured image(

What good are the coins if someone can't sit in there own home and look at them once in awhile for enjoyment.

    Sincerely,
    David Z

I don't know how long ago he relocated, but if I were the police my first call would be to the moving company. It doesn't sound like your father has been in that area long enough to get on the radar of local thieves, but the movers would have seen exactly what he had and where he kept it. Best of luck to you and your family in recovering the collection.

PLASTIC - graded by a grading company like PCGS, NGC, ANACS, etc.
Beaned - secondary evaluation service called CAC to backup the grade on the holder - stickers given on the Plastic

Plastic w/ sticker (a/k/a slab with green bean):

if they are in plastic, it'd help to know the serial numbers and which grading company graded it, as well as if CAC has seen them or not.

  • Thanks for the info, I really was never into coins or really paid much attention if they were graded or not.
