1963-D Jefferson.......I would call this one Full Steps, agree?

Pulled this one from a mint set this evening. Would you agree this has a good shot of receiving a FS designation?

Any opinions on grade? I'm thinking 64, but interested in hearing what others think...

    .
my guess is that they won't treat that scratch/gouge very well breaking the lines of the steps like it does.

i've seen mercs and jeffies with impeccable separation only to be done in by a miniscule bump/ding etc, just brutal

too bad cuz that one is cloooooose

grade is probably 62, 63 if the graders didn't sleep well the night before

It has some issues, but its better than any I have, that have
drivin me crazy over the years, alls I can say is maybe or maybe
not, with that I see it as a 63 or 64 at best, but nothing the less
a decent stepped coin that is tough,

Wow thats a ton of hits for a mint set coin, I could see that going as low as AU, as to the steps I think its a 50/50 chance.

Thats a close call. I probably wouldn't submit it because even if it gets the fs designation, you'll likely get a grade that doesn't justify the cost of submitting the coin. Very nice steps for a 63-D through.

Very nice, but I see only 4 steps.

Close. I could see it in a FS holder potentially but I could just as well see it not.

1963-Ds are tough to find with decent strike and steps. While the hits make it look a little rough, it is a nice 1963-D. This will fit very nicely in a raw 2X2 set and mark it as "Tough, 5 Steps with Nick". The Nick on bottom step disqualifies it for FS. I grade it MS63, stretch MS64.

    Nice find!

two relevant points-----unstruck planchet flaws shouldn't be confused with post-strike contact marks and by my interpretation of the PCGS standard for assigning Full Steps this coin wouldn't make it.

    You might.

    PCGS might.

But other more picky folks definitely will not.

Hits have never qualified a coin for AU. Luster breaks are needed for the AU designation.

The OP's coin is definitely not a 64. As stated earlier, 62 or possibly 63.

    I agree.
    When in doubt, don't.
