Chicago SDB find

messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,299 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just saw a bit at the end of the 10:00 news where a retired Chicago police officer claimed an abandoned SDB through the state's abandoned property claims process. The state treasurer's office delivered the contents today. Three canvas bags containing 2700 silver dollars. Looked mostly like Morgans. Melt is about $67,500, but they neglected to mention that on the news. All they said was what the face value is. Of course, now he's ripe for the picking by sharks and slimeballs, so hopefully he doesn't get robbed -- figuratively or literally.

Was he next of kin to the original box holder or some such? I wouldn't mind such a windfall, myself. Maybe he knows what he's doing, maybe not, or perhaps he has a relative who's a collector and can guide.
  • I didn't know you can claim abandoned boxes...I figured it's contents just went to the state and then they were auctioned off or something.

If he is a retired cop, he's used to dealing with "sharks and slimeballs".image

He was able to establish proof that he was the depositor's grandson.

What I saw on TV did not look like MS pieces. Only saw Morgans.

That SDB musta been one helluvastrong drawer. 2700 Morgans would weigh about 150 lbs.
