In that particular state of preservation and originality, I would guess that it is practically unique.

That date is judged much tougher than most so I'm not sure why they didn't just call it MS-62. image

Wow, so much nicer than the dipped or AT crap we see so often...
This coin has character, almost too much for a slab.

Your coin is very attractive and solid for the grade but I wouldn't bet against it having been dipped once before perhaps 30 years ago.

    Can we see the reverse?

This is what kills me, I couldn't sell a certified, PCGS MS example for LESS than paid, blows me away, but whatever.

Yeah, I've heard rumors to that effect image
I am not used to seeing this steel grey, which I find most appealing (esp on Walkers), on dipped out silver which is what I think 71Jagaurs was getting at. In any event, I was speaking of the comment about the slab.

    Best wishes,

That is a lot of money for that coin, but it looks like a wonderful piece.

BTW, you can sell me any 84-S graded MS by either of the top two services for this price unseen.

I have a 95-O that looks just like it. Same appearance, same surfaces, color.

    Nice coin. Very original.

Nice, for sure. But $5581.25? Holy smokes. I have an NGC 58, now PCGS 55 I paid $960 for. Someone offer me a grand.

You can't buy a nice AU58 84-S at anywhere near even PCGS values.

$1800-2500 will secure you a nice example with breast feather details.

I'm not seeing what the + is for on this example and I hate to be the bearer of bad news but both the obverse and reverse seem to suffer from mild pvc issues.

  • Truthfully, I dont think I paid to much for this coin. Once the people at the live auction had a chance to see the coin and bid, I almost lost this coin. I am happy with my purchase.

In fact most of the AU58+ Coins I have seen at auction sold at ms62-63 prices. Luckily this didnt go higher.

  • Tough coin, nice find.
The 1884 s is for sure a wild coin... should be common as dirt in MS.... but all went out for folks to use.
Kinda neat to have a non rare coin..... be so rare!

The 1884-S in true Mint State is a legitimately tough coin. This is a date that third party grading really had an effect on. All of the 1970s "UNCs" turned in to certified AU50-AU55 coins and the true scarcity of real Mint States began to be appreciated.

Circs and even up to mid AUs are common. If you notice, 1884-S Dollars in Mint State have completely dried up in the current marketplace. One used to be able to find MS-61/62 certified coins from time to time, but those types of pieces just aren't around presently for the most part.

The OPs coin looks like a great coin! I would love to see it in hand.

This is not what the auction records at HA.com state but I don't know the market to be honest.

I agree, and am wondering if PCGS would give it an acetone bath to remove the light film.

However, it does look nice for the date/cond.
