What are your best raw finds that graded and you have kept in your collection?

coinsarefuncoinsarefun Posts: 21,758 ✭✭✭✭✭
Most of us have cherry picked certain coins and kept them but still many have sold them.

I would like to see your best find or finds that you found raw and graded and remains and WILL remain in your core collection.

I have a few....
One is a token.... I searched for years, not really scarce but I wanted a superbly toned example. I found this one under a pile of tokens for sale in a local coin show
One a 1944 mint set where the 44-S graded a MS66. Very difficult to find with a great strike. I found this one on Ebay years ago.
And the last one is a darksider, again not exceeding rare date but difficult to find in better grade and nicely toned with deep mirror PL surfaces. This I also found years ago on Ebay,

I bought a $5 Liberty at a flea market for a little over melt. Got it graded at the old ANACS (small white slab). It was an 1881/0 and graded AU58. It was a nice flashy coin with full luster and was very free of contact marks.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

My one and only. Ebay, raw. Missed when it was first auctioned but the buyer didn't pay. Got it the second time around. Graded P66.

This one I found at the first coin show I went to. Had been in the owners shop many times before but he bought it at the show and put it into a 2x2 with VF for the grade.

When I finally joined the Collectors Club it went off with my first submission of the vouchers.

I don't really see me ever finding a upgrade for the date. BTW had it re-holdered this year to get the edge view holder.

One of these days I'm going to have to buy a camera and learn how to post a pic. This coin was slabbed after the A.N.A. sold ANACS but it looks properly graded. Looks like what used to be called a "super slider". I agree that the small white ANACS holder are nice.

I have been SO LUCKY buying raw coins

Each of these top 7 listed coins were around $10 ... (slightly more expensive raw coins are listed at the bottom)

I bought this neon reverse toned Lincoln for $75 and PCGS graded it MS65BN first time through (yes, it really looks like that on the reverse!)

    image

This 1941 Proof Lincoln was $30. PCGS graded it PR64BN first time through. Big wow on the color.

    image

I bought this 1917 Lincoln for $90 and PCGS graded it MS65RB first time through which guide prices around $200

    image

This was a coup. I bought this raw for $395 from a local B&M coin dealer. PCGS slapped an MS64 grade on this first time through, which guide prices around $1800

My avatar over there was a raw ebay purchase for about $75.00

It's in a PCGS 64 holder. A lot of profit to take there, but I'll probably never sell that one.

Bought this Roosie on the PCGS BST for $10 and NGC graded the coin MS67*FT. The coin was in my #1 NGC Roosie Set when the set sold awhile back. But, I loved it so much I bought it back.

A couple years ago I bought a raw 1871-CC Seated half for a few hundred dollars and sent it to PCGS and it graded a VG08. Unfortunately it doesn't qualify here because I sold it to acquire other coins. I sure wish I had held on to that thing. image

I picked up a 1956 mint set from a dealer at a show because one of the '56-D quarters was beautifully toned with great luster ... Decided to keep it even before sending it in to PCGS because it was so amazing. Didn't really caring what it graded because, well you look at it and just say wow! ... it graded MS67.

Got this raw graded XF from my dealer in mid-2010. Paid a few % over melt:

    image

About the same time I bought this raw. Though I'm pretty meticulous with records, I can't find what I paid for it originally. But both me and my dealer believe it was VFish. Somewhere around $900.

I unfortunately don't have photos of it since it's in the SDB, but mine would be a 1972 DDO #1 that I picked out of a roll a few years ago. Later slabbed 63RD at PCGS. Don't think I'll ever sell it.

    Great examples everyone.

It appears that eBay is/was a great place to get great raw coins at a bargain price even though many say it's not soimage

This 1842 $2.50 was purchased raw off ebay for a bargain price. It graded PCGS F12 CAC.

Its not much to look at but is one of only 30 in all grades at PCGS and the only one stickered. It is now pictured in Coinfacts and Photograde.

Worth very, very little monetarily....but I found a 1943/2 Jefferson nickel while roll searching with my mom (who has since passed). Had it certified by ANAC late last year.....a solid Fine.

Needless to say, this will not leave me.

This will be a great thread to reference for those who advocate 'buy slabbed coins only, because if it's raw, there's a reason why it's raw'.....
granted there is a lot of junk that's raw out there, but more than enough needles in the haystack to make it worthwhile for those with a good eye.

Paid off well for MikeinFL, but man, I'd be very leery of buying raw US gold on eBay especially (without being able to inspect in hand) and hoping for a good result upon submission to the TPGs! image

Were it a raw pic as nice as what Mike posted, then I might. But would wager that as pictured is NOT how it was offered on eBay!

I bought a 58-D half from a small dealer about 25 years ago. It is beautifully toned and that was the reason I bought it ($50.00). I had it certified pcgs about 10 years ago and it came back 66FBL.... that is one coin that I will never sell.... my heirs will have to decide what happens with it!!

For $25.00 I bought a 1961 proof set in OGP with a possible Cameo half dollar. Turns out the half dollar is the "Big One" DDR variety.

    One of my better pickups.

Also bought a Library Of Coins Album of MS 1938-1961 Jefferson Nickels at a B&M. The 1945 P Nickel is the DDR Variety and worth more as a single than I paid for the entire set.

NICE! but you never mentioned th eholder?
Edited to add I missed the star, ok NGC. But it isn't the finest known. I myself just passed on a drop dead gorgeous ms67 in old ngc no line fatty CACed, just thought you should know. >>

Wouldn't a 67 PLUS and STAR be considered finer than just a 67? What if I send mine and get it CAC'd?
