Gosh, this is impossible to net grade. This is the reason PCGS doesn't do net grading. One thing I will say is that if you decide to sell that, eBay is the place. Better date large cents with excellent details tend to do very well in true auctions.
I generally don't like net grading. I think it's fairer to say it's "x details with y problem(s)", then let the bidder/buyer determine how much the problem(s) should discount the piece.
XF/AU details, net grade F/VF. The gouge on the reverse is also quite distracting, unfortunately..

I'll say XF details Net VF20.
Just a shot in the dark.
Net grade?.....possibly Fine to VF.
But net grade in this case isn't the important thing.
It's the value that is.
Solution: start it at $1 on Ebay and it'll find its true value.

There is no reason to be generous with problem coins in this market.

Dunno how I would net grade it, because I don't think that way (and was kind of glad when ANACS went away from the practice).
But if you forced me to net grade it, I dunno... VF net?
I like it. Agree that it was probably a detector find, and a lucky one at that.
It must have been AU and red at the time
it was buried.
Net grade? hmmm, 25 vf anyway you slice it,imho
