PSA 1 vs EVID TRIM

I always wondered why one card that is missing a piece is given a PSA 1 grade while another card can get an 'EVID TRIM' designation and not holdered or holdered as 'AUTHENTIC'. In both cases, paper was removed from the card. I guess you could say that in one case, the paper was removed to deceive the buyer while the other case is honest wear. I can buy that. However, you could make an argument that the trimmed card could also be considered a PSA 1, even if it was trimmed to make it look mint. I got to thinking about it when I came across this card and thought it would be something interesting for the board to comment on during a long weekend. What are your opinions?

IMO any card that is missing a piece should get an authentic only grade. Any card that is trimmed, should also receive an authentic grade with the notation of trimmed added to the flip.

I also believe cards with pin holes or punctures should get authentic as well. The only cards that should receive number grades are whole cards IMO

I know it's not that way, and that's okay as far as I'm concerned as it's not my grading company, but if it was, the above is what I would do

That makes sense. I mean if someone trimmed a card and it got rejected, what's to prevent them from tearing a section of the card off and getting a PSA 1?

I agree with Mike except for one thing - about pin holes.

I know I am in the minority here, but pin holes do not bother me all that much.

Let's say you have an otherwise pristine card, but it has a clean pin hole. I would be ok with treating it like a small surface wrinkle and giving that card a PSA 5, and not the automatic PSA 1 that it would get now.

I guess that what I am trying to say is that a pin hole bothers me about as much as a crease does.

  • Would you be considering cards with even a speck of paper loss as Authentic? Seems harsh.
