Is this 1969-D Washington Quarter nice enough to submit?

I'm back to opening some rolls, and the roll of 69-Ds appears to be never-previously opened. This is the nicest of the bunch I think, because the fields are pretty smooth, and I'm guessing that means it is well-struck. No flow lines or die polishing at all on it. And no die erosion (most of the others have die erosion).

It's difficult to tell from the photograph IMO.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!

I'm guessing yes but it's impossible to be sure from a picture. Experience tells me this is
a nice slightly PL coin from a mint set. It's not a real early die strike so should have nice luster.
It appears to be very clean.

This date comes pretty nice so it really needs to be nearly as clean as it appears.

IMO It'd only be worth a submission if you think it has very good odds of hitting MS68. If it comes back 67, you MIGHT break even, less and you're out. What do you think, in hand does it look virtually flawless and perfectly struck? Just based on the picture I'd say no, but who knows. If your goal is merely preservation of what looks like a nice piece, then go for it however.

Rinse it in acetone as I am seeing a little haze might just be the image but it can only help and for $14.00 if it's sharing the ride with some others your not our much.
And MS67 is the money coin for this date as there are only three MS68 graded to date.
Even if it only gets a MS66 you will probably make some money on it the early clad quarters are hard to find in high grade slabs.

There might be a little haze on this coin, because the end coins have haze. So I'll acetone them. I had printed out my Coin Forum info on Type B reverses, and this is not a Type B. (I happened to have a 69-S handy for comparison.)

I'm with the folks who think this is a nice PL coin that is hard to say much about based on the images. Usually and weakness of strike really shows up in the hair above the ear as what appears to be ticky-tack chatter. Now, to find a P that looks like that.

You did say roll coin didn't you.

    It sure looks mint set.

Clean fields can imply no planchet scratching which is correlated to strike but most
marks are independent of strike quality.

This is my PCGS MS-67 if you want to see an example. It's not one I submitted myself, but it is a blazer! I must have caught a slow time for bidding, I got this one for about $70, including the buyer fees. Yours looks very nice, seems profflike from the pictures. It's worth the $14 gamble.

  • jmski52's and ElmerFusterpuck's quarters are from different master dies. There 4 different used on 1968 S quarters and these 4 plus 1 other were used on the 1969D.
