A personal note of thanks.
I have to say after meeting Ian at ANA and having bought five figures worth of coins off Great Collection’s auctions I have to say I’m really impressed. They are a nice change of pace from the big auction houses.
Just my 2 cents. We need more auctions houses like GC!

Opening Bids ( just shy of retail ) two beautiful Barber Dimes.
One in AU 55 for the new set & a great MS for the Date Set.
It's not a true auction in my way of thinking either, Alan.
Regardless, the service was good, so, as they say: you have
to go where the Baker bakes your Bread.

I have bought and sold there and think it is great. I agree it is the sellers setting the high open, not GC themselves. I have started almost all of mine at a buck minus a couple higher grade coins. I really hope they continue to do so well.

Minimum bids (or reserves) is obviously one of the main discussion points with an auction website. We took the stance since day one NEVER to have hidden reserves, so you are never wasting your time (I think we're the only one that discloses reserves from the moment coins list on our site). If something has a $10,000 reserve, the bidding starts at $10,000. If something starts at $1, then the reserve is $1.
As I write this, we have over $250,000 worth of coins listed that started at $1 (ie. that are reserved at $1). These coins include a complete PCGS Buffalo Nickel collection (1926-S in PCGS MS-64, 1937-D Three-Legs in PCGS MS-63 etc.), a 1907 High Relief in PCGS MS-63, 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter in NGC AU-58, plenty of really cool errors and so forth.

If I had one recommendation it would be to focus on a strategic customer grab/drive to set new registration goals to increase traffic. The more traffic the more and higher sales which equals more consignments with starts the process of more traffic anew. I would offer coupons for new registrars, group consignment deals for complete specialty collection (tiger team to search HA for which niches draw the most active bidding), Special bidder groups with strategic communication efforts. Just my thoughts as I would like to see them become a collector friendly HA.
I think Ian and Rae do a great job. I even had my 17 year old son use them when he wanted to sell some of his states quarters to get money to spend on his girlfriend.
Ian is one of the hardest working guys in the coin business and I think he'll be a future star.

Each coin is different and has an optimal auction site. It is up to the seller to decide where that is. I was satisfied with my sales at GC. I have also sold some on ebay through airplanenut recently, and I was happy with the results. It really depends on the coin, your risk tolerance, the audience, the market, etc. There is no "one-size-fits-all", but GC definitely has a place among my auction outlets for selling (and buying) coins.
Too slow moving for me! I hope they do well, but EBay is not in danger here at all.

Since I started on Great Collections selling my Morgan Collection I would not sell on any other
web site. eBay is a pain with all the hoops and the others charge a lot more for selling and do
not list coins fast enough for me and do not pay you for sales near as fast as GC. I have bought
many coins from them and I like the buyer's fees. Thanks Ian for doing a great job.

I totally agree! As you know,that is where I bought your 1880/9-S Morgan PCGS MS65DMPL SecurePlus from your registry set.I was very happy as the buyer,
and I will always love the magnified imagery that can fill up my whole computer screen on the GC site.

Enough of my eBay buyers (to make it worthwhile) are not true coin collectors and would probably never have bid on my lots of they were listed off-eBay. For that reason alone, I don't believe eBay is in danger of losing it's massive coin / currency / bullion business.
Where and how I buy my coins is a totally different logic. The answer, typically, is raw and in-person.

What?! I recently bought an 1885-O Morgan in a PCGS holder for $101 plus the 10% buyers premium. It is graded MS65. Beat that!

When I read this, it sounds like you have EBay confused with something else. You have to list your own auctions, and the buyer has to pay you.

You might want to check with Ian, you would be surprised. I am sending in
175 coins next week and only maybe 30 are over $100. with most running
between $15. and $60.

"Too slow from my standpoint", meant very low quantity of auctions, (3 trade dollars listed for instance, 679 on EBay) and once a week close dates. If that's your style, all the more power to you. I like being in control of my auctions, and when they close.

Yup, on eBay ya do but GC just send them a box and they send you a check when coins sell. No trips to the post office, dealing with eBay buyers or
questions and no fees from Pay Pal or the bay.
I sent 21 lots in February. It took only 4 auctions for all lots to be sold. I started all lots at below my cost. I ended up losing $150 on $5000
worth of coins. As a collector, I expected to lose some and it did not bother me. I priced the coins to sell the coins, not to waste GC's time
and effort. I too notice some sellers coins starting at ridiculously high reserves. They don't sell and are a waste of time for GC. It's too bad
that Ian doesn't weed the overpriced starting bids out.
I have just sent another 29 lots into GC and hope to sell all again. Great Company. Thanks Ian.

Interesting. I have a question about what you used as a gude to determine the figure of "$5000 worth of coins". Someday,I would love to be a seller on GC,but believe we are currently in a "buyers market". I have only sold junk silver recently to raise cash to upgrade my collection.

That plus the fact that a slower site means that it turns off many potential buyers resulting in potential loss(es) to seller(s), eg I saw that a CAC 1921-P merc sold for a "measly" $900 and change. If I saw that I would've paid $1300 and change for it, thus the seller and therefore GC suffered some loss of $$dinero.

This summer sure has seemed like a buyers market. That could change this fall, expect things to pick up a lot in October/November.

Understood -- one of the reasons for the question is to add another data point to figure out which venues are optimal for selling coins. Can you elaborate on what types of coins or coin pricepoints you think make sense to list on GC?
In light of the anti-competitive buyers premium increases from the "big boys", it is nice that another viable alternative appers to be gaining traction.
