Great Collections is a awesome auction site

A personal note of thanks.

I have to say after meeting Ian at ANA and having bought five figures worth of coins off Great Collection’s auctions I have to say I’m really impressed. They are a nice change of pace from the big auction houses.

Just my 2 cents. We need more auctions houses like GC!

  • I agree that they are doing an excellent job with all the auction competition out there. Many like me were turned off by ebay's huckster salesmanship for years with uncertified oversold material. Reputable auction companies like GC are filling a vital market niche. But every site I visit, seemingly, there are GC's ads. I know it's difficult to obtain market share and maintain it, too bad there isn't a better way. I have checked to see what desirable collector coins on GC's site are getting in terms of visitors and often there are not more than a couple dozen site "peepers" on any given coin. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find nice coins as the old time collections have been already certified and end up in a collection for many years.

I just started looking at that site based on a recommendation
of a good friend in the business. I was able to buy at their
Opening Bids ( just shy of retail ) two beautiful Barber Dimes.
One in AU 55 for the new set & a great MS for the Date Set.

It's not a true auction in my way of thinking either, Alan.

Regardless, the service was good, so, as they say: you have
to go where the Baker bakes your Bread.

    New Barber Purchases
  • But they are not listing at full Trends, maybe at GS ask. If you start most coins at $1, there may not be much of a market for it at the seller's cost and cost of certification. I lot of coins I have sold at GC are basically break even. Many coins do not belong in auction, common type gold, coins where there are active buyers just by picking up the phone and getting a quote from the major buyers. If you have raw coins that will not get details grades, GC or Teletrade may well be the best option; but with GC the coins get done twice as fast.

I have purchased coins on the site and sold ($1 start, no reserve) and plan to continue to do so.

<< <i>I like the site, but again, they start most auctions at retail. >>

Most likely the because seller sends the coin to Great Collections before it is listed and the coin is basically off the market elsewhere. Pretty much same as setting a reserve at retail.

With a site like ebay seller can start low and still cancel auction before ending if he doesn't like the action and because he has possession of the coin he can make it available elsewhere.

I have bought and sold there and think it is great. I agree it is the sellers setting the high open, not GC themselves. I have started almost all of mine at a buck minus a couple higher grade coins. I really hope they continue to do so well.

I listed a PCGS BTW half on GC with a $1 start. It sold for $6.00 I wasn't too thrilled with the result. No more $1 starts for me.

Thank you for everyone's support and comments.

Minimum bids (or reserves) is obviously one of the main discussion points with an auction website. We took the stance since day one NEVER to have hidden reserves, so you are never wasting your time (I think we're the only one that discloses reserves from the moment coins list on our site). If something has a $10,000 reserve, the bidding starts at $10,000. If something starts at $1, then the reserve is $1.

As I write this, we have over $250,000 worth of coins listed that started at $1 (ie. that are reserved at $1). These coins include a complete PCGS Buffalo Nickel collection (1926-S in PCGS MS-64, 1937-D Three-Legs in PCGS MS-63 etc.), a 1907 High Relief in PCGS MS-63, 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter in NGC AU-58, plenty of really cool errors and so forth.

As more people frequent the site, there will be more $1 starting bids. I think consignors don't want a coin to be "stolen" for a ridiculous price, so they set a higher reserve. If there is enough "eyes" making sure that does not happen, then the reserves will come down.

Ian is doing a great job.

I just bought my S/CC form them just a couple of days ago. It was my first purchase from them as while I have scanned them from time to time they always seemed to have mostly type stuff with a few better coins here and there but not in my specialty. They recently got a large group of high-end Trades and it not only got me to sign up but to aggressively bid & win a nice coin. Even if they go awhile before their next batch of Trade Dollars I will still check them with more frequency as I have popped my cherry and found them to be a very straight forward top shelf experience.

If I had one recommendation it would be to focus on a strategic customer grab/drive to set new registration goals to increase traffic. The more traffic the more and higher sales which equals more consignments with starts the process of more traffic anew. I would offer coupons for new registrars, group consignment deals for complete specialty collection (tiger team to search HA for which niches draw the most active bidding), Special bidder groups with strategic communication efforts. Just my thoughts as I would like to see them become a collector friendly HA.

Each coin is different and has an optimal auction site. It is up to the seller to decide where that is. I was satisfied with my sales at GC. I have also sold some on ebay through airplanenut recently, and I was happy with the results. It really depends on the coin, your risk tolerance, the audience, the market, etc. There is no "one-size-fits-all", but GC definitely has a place among my auction outlets for selling (and buying) coins.

Great Collection has fast response to e-mails. Super Fast shipping - win on Sunday..... coin ships on Monday! The website has a nice design, easy to use. The only thing GC needs is more bidders.... that will come in time.

Here's the main difference between Great Collections, Teletrade, and all the other auction sites, vs. eBay:

on a site like GC you're selling to coin enthusiasts

on eBay, you're selling to all audiences

Enough of my eBay buyers (to make it worthwhile) are not true coin collectors and would probably never have bid on my lots of they were listed off-eBay. For that reason alone, I don't believe eBay is in danger of losing it's massive coin / currency / bullion business.

Where and how I buy my coins is a totally different logic. The answer, typically, is raw and in-person.

When I read this, it sounds like you have EBay confused with something else. You have to list your own auctions, and the buyer has to pay you.

"Too slow from my standpoint", meant very low quantity of auctions, (3 trade dollars listed for instance, 679 on EBay) and once a week close dates. If that's your style, all the more power to you. I like being in control of my auctions, and when they close.

Yup, on eBay ya do but GC just send them a box and they send you a check when coins sell. No trips to the post office, dealing with eBay buyers or
questions and no fees from Pay Pal or the bay.

I sent 21 lots in February. It took only 4 auctions for all lots to be sold. I started all lots at below my cost. I ended up losing $150 on $5000
worth of coins. As a collector, I expected to lose some and it did not bother me. I priced the coins to sell the coins, not to waste GC's time
and effort. I too notice some sellers coins starting at ridiculously high reserves. They don't sell and are a waste of time for GC. It's too bad
that Ian doesn't weed the overpriced starting bids out.

I have just sent another 29 lots into GC and hope to sell all again. Great Company. Thanks Ian.

Interesting. I have a question about what you used as a gude to determine the figure of "$5000 worth of coins". Someday,I would love to be a seller on GC,but believe we are currently in a "buyers market". I have only sold junk silver recently to raise cash to upgrade my collection.

That plus the fact that a slower site means that it turns off many potential buyers resulting in potential loss(es) to seller(s), eg I saw that a CAC 1921-P merc sold for a "measly" $900 and change. If I saw that I would've paid $1300 and change for it, thus the seller and therefore GC suffered some loss of $$dinero.

Understood -- one of the reasons for the question is to add another data point to figure out which venues are optimal for selling coins. Can you elaborate on what types of coins or coin pricepoints you think make sense to list on GC?

In light of the anti-competitive buyers premium increases from the "big boys", it is nice that another viable alternative appers to be gaining traction.

I checked Great Collections about six times in the past few months. I have yet to find a single Bust series PCGS AU coin that I would want, don't even know if they had one. Looks to me to cater to ANACS and NGC coins, at least in the Bust series. Guess my interests don't jibe with Great Collections offerings.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
