Since I don't have paypal I realize I am given a level of trust when a buyer sends me a check. I in turn show the buyer trust by shippping when I receive the check. As a matter of fact I go by the PO and ship then deposit the check. I realize everytime I do a BST deal that something could happen to me and I won't let the buyer lose. Many of the long time members here work just the same way. Chances are you are dealing with a newbe.
If you sell some coins on this board ... and the buyer PROMPTLY sends you a check in the mail for some coins you promised to send them ... and the the buyer asks you 4 days later (by PM and EMAIL) if you got the check ... don't give the silent treatment for days and days after that ... ALWAYS COMMUNICATE
I just had this happen to me ... and I couldn't take the week long silence anymore and put a stop on my check .... WHICH I IMMEDIATELY communicated to the seller by email and by PM ... (a courtesy I was not granted for over a week by the seller)
Trust is EVERYTHING in this cash business.
If you are going away or don't plan on responding for long periods of time after the buyer sends you a check, find some way to communicate that information to the buyer. Send him a PM or an email or give them a call ... BEFORE you go away, (tell him or her that you will not be available and/or will not communicate for a week or more) because we buyers have no idea if you are not responding due to you changing your mind on selling, or having some sort of health problem (perhaps died), or if you are just a scammer.
I remember reading on another board that a seller was taken ill soon after a transaction and was in the hospital, and he was still able to communicate that to the buyer in a short period of time.
In this day of smart phones, portable tablet computers, even land line phones there is just no excuse for not communicating.
COMMUNICATE always.
When we as buyers send you a large sum of money in the mail, we need to have some feeling that you are going to be responsible on holding up your end of the bargain. The silent treatment for a week is NO WAY to build any sort of trust in a relationship and is just not acceptable (to me at least).
(One final note, I don't mind delay's due to unforeseen circumstances, i realize that sh*t happens .... if you are in the hospital, I understand you cant make it to the post office, but either email or call me or find some way to communicate that information to me via a family member or friend)
These kinds of events really just push me to stay on ebay where sellers are responsive and prompt ... and you have that ebay buyers protection backing everything up.
If I send my hard earned money to you PROMPTLY and COMMUNICATE ... I both expect and deserve to have you, the seller, be just as prompt and communicative. >>

I couldn't disagree more. I know the OP through a few transactions, many threads on various message boards and emails between the two of us. I will guarantee you he is not afraid to spend money.
When putting that check in the mail for hundreds or thousands of dollars, a quick note of receipt or some type of acknowledgment should be important to all of us.
To many it is a sign of courtesy and respect. WL was shown none.
Sounds familier to what I just went through. Seller took my money had been quick to respond till the ball was in his court then couldn't get any response, but as soon as I opened up a dispute he was in contact. Mine ended all the way into claim, this is really unacceptable. Would you go to a store front that gave you the same type of service? No you wouldn't, so why do all these supposed sellers think that once they have the deal done on the buyers end its when ever they feel like delivering. Good luck, I hope you have less wait and headache to deal with then I had too.
I can see someone heading out of town forgetting to tell someone he is leaving before a check gets to them. It would be nice to get notification.
On a expensive coin I just sold the buyer asked for a few extra days to pay, fine no problem. Once I got paid it meant I had to ship from the ANA, no big deal had my label printed and ready. Then no PO at the ANA. So it took me a few extra days to ship since I had to find fed ex once I gave up on local. PO's. The buyer and I stayed in communication, so no problems.
There's always multiple sides to each story.....the catch is that each person expects from others what they will, but that isn't always communicated upfront.
Some people are very laid back and the world will wait for them, they believe, and so they go their merry way at a leisurely pace. Others are a bit more "attuned" and expect each step to be carried out and to be informed.
Both can work, but not when working together without proper communication of expectations, and that is what appears to have happened here.
Personally, I try to let folks I am transacting with know each step as it comes up (as a few folks such as Swampboy/SeattleSlammer/or LakeSammman, and they will likely tell you I overcommunicate ). However, there are times when things come up while I am juggling a lot of other things and the best of intentions still get slipped (ie....maybe the check came in while I was rushing out the door, and then deadlines hit, appointments hit, and vacation hit......or, maybe the wife/kid brought in the mail, put it in the right place, but I didn't notice....etc).
I would likely have been upset, being in the OP's shoes, but I doubt I would have stop-payment'ed the check as quickly. I would have given a PM (or a call if I had the number), or an email if I had that, and said "I haven't heard anything....I am a bit concerned that maybe you didn't get the check and you may be thinking it is on my part, since I haven't heard from you. For both our sake's, I will put a stop payment on it today and, if it does show up, please let me know then rip it up, and we can always do a new check at that time".
Something like that would have gotten the same attention, I believe, and been a little more friendly to take...imho.
But, each person has their own way and their own style.
As for informing SM1.......sorry, but that doesn't sound like it should even be part of the equation. No one was ripped off. It was a difference in communication. If you want to go crying about every little thing you don't like, go to ebay.

I see both sides, what i generally do is agree to buy something and tell the seller how and when i will pay. When i deal with a person and not a established company i remit payment with tracking. I send a short email with the money order number (if that is how i paid) and the tracking number and i am done. I do not feel the need to email 3 times a day to see if payment has arrived. I can see when my package arrives and then hope the seller will email me a note saying when my package will ship, but i do not require it. I might send a follow up email in 7 days if the item has not arrived after i know they recieved my funds.
I am not tethered to the internet, i do not have a smart phone and i do not feel the need to send 20 emails back and forth on a deal. Some buyers think you should be able to respond instantly to an email, my work sometimes does not allow me to have internet access for a dAY or two at a time.
A lot can be taken care in the email when you decide to buy something. I would ask up front when my item will ship if i am on a time requirement. If you want the item insured ask up front. I never assume anything anymore, i just spell it out so all the cards are on the table. Cover all the bases up front and be done with it.

lcoopie said it best. Interesting that he immediately communicated after you told him you had cancelled the check. Too bad you can't tell us who to avoid.
Communication is the key to a smooth transaction, period. I know Winged liberty is a reputable and honest person and with out question a person I would do business with. If it were me, and the same situation, I would have done the same. It's always the best policy to communicate with your buyer, especially in the middle of a transaction.
The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
Just keep it simple. If I'm buying, I'll tell the seller the MO is in the mail en-route to you. Seller writes back to say MO was received and your coin is one the way. I receive the coin, PM the seller I received it and everything looks good. Done this hundreds of times, maybe one glitch, forgot to mail it or something, nothing that a PM can't solve. Communication does wonders. Say what you mean, mean what you say, it's that simple.

In reading this thread I experienced mixed feelings. #1. I have read many posts by the OP here and have got to feel comfortable that he is an honest person who really likes coins and the hobby. #2. I "think" that those who expressed concern in the fact that the OP did a stop payment on his check after only one week, probably haven't followed the OP's postings in the past and haven't gotten to understand why he says what he does. No question COMMUNICATION is key and while Winged Liberty may have been a little quick to stop payment the seller should have communicated a little better in my opinion. Steve
