I am fine with taxes if they were spent wisely. The only issue on the internet tax is before long they will need another source of taxable income and then another and another.
I say let ebay collect all the taxes from every item sold thru their site and keep the paperwork to a min for the sellers. Same for all the other big net sites. Let them earn the fees they charge.
Mark NGC registry V-Nickel proof #6!!!! working on proof shield nickels # 8 with a bullet!!!!
I think the slickest thing the government did was start talking about the budget as a percentage of all of the money. "We may spend 8 gazillion on bad schools, but as a percentage of all of the money, it's a real deal". Budgets should be set in real dollars and increases should be voted on, not set as a percentage of GDP with automatic increases.
I had hoped that the current occupant of 1300 PA ave would have done tax reform instead of health care, it would have done a great deal of good and have been universally applauded if it had been done well.
I don't believe I have a bias on the subject of taxation, I have never received any real government money directly, I make a 100% forthright declaration of income and taxes, I don't get gifts or other money from others who would influence my objectivity.
That being said, the federal and state budgets should be balanced. If you ever go up to northern Vermont or New Hampshire, you will probably see the "Caledonian Record", the newspaper that covers that area. Prominently, the Roman, Cato, is quoted on the front page every day where he said that the budget must be balanced. There have be many suggestions how to do this equitably. I would think the principle should be that those who are benefitting the most from the system should bear the greatest responsibility in that regard. It makes no sense for hedge funders to be paying 15% investment income taxes, while tangible asset traders and investors would be taxed at net 28% in the IIRC. Unearned income especially when done by high frequency trading algorithms should be taxed well above money earned the hard way, through self-employment. Someone at our coin club talked about how an investment pro on Nantucket he was speaking with recently bragged about making around $50K in the first milliseconds every trading day with the best computer and software available. And that gets taxed at only 15% after costs?
I know the huge growth of government budgets must be addressed seriously, they need to say no to those who expect the government to subsidize irresponsibility and vice.
It has been said that there are two economic sides that have developed, Keynes and Hayek or Mises. I do not believe this is true, there are dozens of economic theories, those who do not swear fealty to the Austiran economists or Keynes represent equally valid economic theories.
The first one will be a very small one..... .5%.. right no big deal. Feds take .25% and the States take.25%. After a couple of years everybody is ok with it. Then the Feds and States "need" the tax money it goes to 1%,2%,3%...... It's for the Kids!4%...... People are starving!!!5%..........
Si vis pacem, para bellum
In God We Trust.... all others pay in Gold and Silver!
In Germany they have a VAT of about 20%. This is paid by the merchant and is included in the listed price on mostly everything. You don't notice it at all, except that it makes everything more expensive. I would think if they set this up in the USA for everything including coins, collectibles and bullion, a large black market would develop at coin shows.
<< <i>The higher the tax, the less there is of the taxed activity=Fewer sales=Less revenue=Raise taxes more=Repeat cycle until everyone is broke. >>
A friend sent me this explanation on the national debt today:
Lesson # 1:* U.S. Tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000 * Fed budget: $3,820,000,000,000 * New debt: $ 1,650,000,000,000 * National debt: $14,271,000,000,000 * Recent budget cuts: $ 38,500,000,000
Let's now remove 8 zeros and pretend it's just a household budget: * Annual family income: $21,700.00 * Money the family spent: $38,200.00 * New debt on the credit card: $16,500.00 * Outstanding balance on the credit card: $142,710.00 * Total budget cuts so far: $38.50
Got It ?????
OK now Lesson # 2: Here's another way to look at the Debt Ceiling:
Let's say, you come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood....and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.
<< <i>Let's say, you come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood....and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings.
What do you think you should do...
Raise the ceilings, or pump out the crap? >>
When it's your house, the answer is pretty clear. You have to do something right now. The problem with comparing this to the debt ceiling is that the people in charge of it have no incentive to do anything other than kick the can down the road with the expectation that by the time things finally blow up past the point of any repair, they'll be long out of office.
The Gov doesn't operate like a household and making a comparison that it does is not realistic. The Gov has been debt-spending ever since WWII. Eisenhower's highway system, Kennedy's space race, etc... Sure, it's huge and beyond comprehension, but so is the economy as a whole. A better comparison to a household would be, as an example, do you go into debt to put your kid in college or tell then to forget college and find a job.
<< <i>Tax is not going to happen. Governments suck too much from us already and are bloated beyond reason. >>

somebody mentioned in an earlier thred, that BST sales pick up. Problem is, most BST sales are traceable thru paypal or check deposits, so if somebody wants to stay in business and away from audits , they best figure those sales in as well.
I might add this though: Currently in NC, if you are not a business, and are just a regular person engaged in casual selling some of your coins via the internet or other individual, you are not required to collect (state) sales tax. I am not sure how this would play out nationally however?
As I also mentioned, its a pain for us, as we have to break down all sales by indivual counties, and report. Just got finished doing July's. Luckily I only have about 5-10 in state ebay sales. The shop is easy as it is all in the county i am in.
25 % of homeowners are under water. There is a major contraction that has occur to reconcile this fact even though most are trying to ignore it. Adding more sales taxes and thereby reducing internet sales at a time like this looks suicidal but I would be surprised if anyone in Washington gets it.
<< <i>Adding more sales taxes and thereby reducing internet sales at a time like this looks suicidal but I would be surprised if anyone in Washington gets it. >>

Ignorance of existing state sales tax requirements for on-line sales (for in-state transactions) and purchases (for out-of-state transactions) appears to be the problem. The Governor of TN is 100% accurate and knows of what he speaks. While he is speaking strictly of EXISTING in-state, on-line sales tax collection required by sellers, buyers involved in out-of-state purchases need to know the EXISTING requirement of reporting and paying a sales tax on the transaction to their home state. Look for states to come after their money. . . can you blame them?

This is what the govt does. It sucks out money that would be spent from the private economy. It pays itself extravagantly. It gives money to it's friends and foreign governments. It wastes tons on stupid ideas. Also, maybe what is not considered that is even worse, if govt takes money in larger amounts from those who risk, sweat, and sacrifice then there is less of that done because the reward hardly becomes worth the work. This sets the economy on a death spiral. That is why it is suicidal.

Okay, in all seriousness Coin sales will continue. Our hobby, like all hobbies, is still an industry, and is a global one. Basically, those entities that cannot or will not adhere to the TOS for usage regarding e-commerce/ taxes, probably will cease to function.
That's pretty much how the RULE of law works, has worked and will work. It always does.
just attended the PNG meeting where Jimmy Hayes discussed the Internet sales tax bill.
The Internet sales tax is being pushed by Amazon.com. They developed software for sellers to collect sales tax from any jurisdiction in the country. State, county, city sales taxes. Now they are monetizing it by offering it to State Governments. The states and cities are licking their chops on the idea of being able to get their hands on taxes that are currently owed, but impossible to collect.
This is not a Democratic or Rebublican-driven idea, it is embraced by all. it is not a National sales tax, although once it passes, there is not much of a jump to get there.
Obama has nothing to do with this, and those that make it into a referendum about his reelection are politicizing it. The house holds the purse strings, not the Executive branch, anyway.
<< <i>well then, I will be adding Amazon to my list of bad sellers. >>
Agree. The CEO of Amazon is well know for supporting left wing causes so it doesn't surprise me that he is supporting this tax scheme.

<< <i>Sounds like a national tax. Probably no exemptions there. I confess I do not know all details though. >>
Well since my local sales tax rate is higher than my commission on coins I sell if there is no exemption why would I want to continue to sell coins on eBay.
Back to the OP's original question somewhat there may be a lot less sellers of coins if the rate is too high why bother when eBay/PayPal and tax make more on the sale than the seller does.
<< <i>Seems these days the concept of "fairness" is so often a clever ploy to get someone to agree to something that is not in their best interests. >>

<< <i>I can't imagine how many camels are trying to get their noses under the tent on this one.
After reading some on the current state of the law I am thinking that this is a clever trick to start a national sales tax. It would be too cumbersome to force on-line retailers to submit tax revenue to thousands of taxing entities so what is the solution? Buler? Well I think the wizards of smart may let the IRS do it. Just submit a uniform percentage of all sales (say 5% to start) to the good ole IRS quarterly and let them distribute to the States after keeping a cut. After awhile the feds will sneak their own tax to the mix and your national sales tax is born. The camel is completely in the tent. >>

one- how does the govt and states enforce it?
two- how do they make sure the tax is the right amount?
three-how does the govt make sure people aren't overcharging to get a bigger %
four-people will find ways around such laws how does the govt stop this?

<< <i>I don't know why anyone (other than our govt overlords) would cheer for any new tax collection effort. Might as well burn the money. >>
Pointing out to the "new tax" whiners that this is not a new tax but only a new effort to collect existing taxes is not the same thing as cheering for it.

<< <i><---Not cheering for taxes. Prefer fair system. " Fair " being operative word. >>
Seems these days the concept of "fairness" is so often a clever ploy to get someone to agree to something that is not in their best interests.
They could still tax services.
<< <i>So my state has a exemption for coin sales and since I get paid at my house no tax is owed right??????
Sounds like a national tax.

A clever ploy is what the media uses to move the masses. Fairness is not a concept, it's an equal balance and measure.
