OT: Lost my fishing buddy yesterday ...

Dad was 79 when he passed yesterday. I wasn't able to be with him in his final moments but my sister and brother said he spent some of them fishing - reeling in a big one I'm sure! I love you Dad, save a spot for me in the boat when HE calls.

Please post a coin with a fish on it in memory of my Dad.

Sorry to hear that, Gene. Losing my father is not a passage I am looking forward to making. My dad will be 74 this year and takes pretty good care of himself, so he's probably got a few miles left in him.

I don't have anything "fishy" on hand, but here's one of the great rarities of Irish coinage: the 1943 florin.

Nearly the entire mintage of these was unreleased and got melted down. They feature a salmon, of course, like all Irish florins.

(Picture borrowed from John Stafford-Langan's great Irish coin site.)

Naturally, I'll never own one of those. The example pictured is one of only four UNCs known to survive.

You know it's rare when people start altering dates to fake one!

That is the only Irish florin date I haven't owned- in fact, the only regular issue Irish predecimal coin I never had in my collection. I had all the others, including the 1943 halfcrown, which is also rare. But not as rare as the florin. The '43 florin is the Mac Daddy of modern Irish coins.

Oh, and here is Lake Logan in Western NC. Named for my grandfather, and one of my favorite vacation spots since childhood.

Sounds to me like maybe that was the sort of place your dad might have liked?
