I did NOT know this about B. Max Mehl.

From Q. David Bowers's "Numismatic Insider" column at www.whitman.com:

He pronounced his name to rhyme with sale, as indicated by
his advertisements which encouraged people to get on his “Mehl-ing list.”
However, most everyone in his lifetime and afterward has used the
pronunciation mell.

I always thought it was pronounced like Mel the cook on "Alice."

Mehl should be pronounced like 'mail' (Mehl means flour in German). His family origins are German-Jewish (what is now Lithuania, as I recall).

My [paternal] heritage is Prussian-Jewish, and we pronounce our name Eh-dull-steen (like Bruce Springsteen) yet most people assume the German "Aye-dull-styne" (like Albert Einstein, who was German-Jewish).

And the "B" stood for "Brasher-Doubloon."

    Who knew?

I saw two of those at the Smithsonian last month. Pretty awesome. Interesting how much darkside lies in early American coinage. We certainly didn't start with a clean slate. They had a very nice display of Mass. shillings too.

I always thought it was pronounced like "meal". Other than reading it out as typed characters I've never heard anyone say it so my pronounciation guess was off it seems.

Another one is "Disme". I've seen the typed discussion but have never heard it verbally.

    Wow!

Now I KNOW I won't get on Jeopardy.

I'll take B. Max Mehl for $200, Alex.

    Alex: The Brasher Doubloon.

    Me: Oh, Oh, I know.
What does the B in B Max Mehl stand for?

    Alex: No you turkey breath.

    Anyone else?

Supposedly, the correct pronunciation for 'disme' is 'deem'.

But, considering that Edison hadn't been born yet, we can only guess.

  • Many people get name pronunciation wrong as others get word pronunciation incorrect. I think of Hugh in "How Green Was My Valley" being reprimanded for pronouncing "misled" like mistled instead of mis-lead. Also for a funny cartoon character who was the only one who could understand Zilly, Clunk stands alone re: Dastardly and Muttley.
