I'm in agreement with you on Abigail Adams place in our history. Dolly Madison was Thomas Jefferson's "first lady" when the White House needed a hostess. She also saved some of the White House treasures before the British got ahold of the White House in the War of 1812. Dolly also has her own commemorative $1.

They should mint the coins depicting the first spouses riding buffalos. Everybody loves buffalos.

The thing that's most troubling about the mint's delay is that they've provided zero information.

Any business that caters to high end customers would offer the courtesy of an announcement.

    Mint's communications grade: Poor.

    Any arguements?

Nope. But at least their incompetence sometimes provides a few interesting opportunities.

Right now you can buy a First Spouse coin containing $807 worth of gold for only $941 (at least until tomorrow). That's less than a 17% premium for a coin with a likely mintage of less than 3,000. Looks to me like a low-risk bet on both gold and scarcity.

Darn forum.Everytime I walk away from a series you drag me back in.The 2012s may have a good chance at low mintages, especially if gold moves somewhat higher.
By the way, whatever became of the mints policy to have their coins produced by the first 3 months of the year?
  • Ya it will be interesting to see what they do. Release all of them at once?!

They may figure that offering them all at the end of the year may actually create more interest in them from speculators expecting very low mintages. Of course that may be giving them too much credit for thinking.

Pretty sure these were legislated by Congress. So Congress would have to pass a new law canceling the program. Unlike the Silver San Fran set, those are made up by the Mint and they can do what they want with those.

  • Im assuming theve been put on the back burner because of dwindling interest. Im anticipating an update though cause ive been collecting the series.

I do not know how the nuts and bolt operations at the Mint work but it could be that to save time and money they decided to run all 4 coin designs in one run. This could create better efficiencies on the line for such small runs. And if they are prevented from any second batches next year then sales could run short of a full year.

There was a bill introduced (HR2635) last year that died in committee that would have shelved the 1st Spouse series along with the prez dollars.

    HR2635HR 2635

Looks like the Mint is holding off with new issues until the current supply dries up.

It seems like HR 2635 would have merely 'suspended' or 'postpone' the PDs when there are enough coins in the stockpiles. If this bill ahd passed, perhaps the PDs could continue but with year gaps in between. Does it mention the First Spouse series at all?

    Here's the summary from GovTrack.us:

    << <i>H.R. 2635: COINS Act of 2011

    112th Congress, 2011–2012

To amend title 31, United States Code, to suspend the Presidential $1 Coin Program when coin stockpiles are sufficient to meet the needs for one year, and for other purposes.
