Update: PSA DOES NOW Recognize 1981 O-Pee-Chee Greybacks!

I recall seeing one listed on a registry set but it was unfilled. I know, at one time, PSA didn't delineate between OPC's white (aka buff) colored backs with the rarer grey (or gray) colored backs but does anyone know if this has changed? I believe the registry set I saw one listed on was Pete Rose. Can't be sure though. Any insight?

For those not in the know, an example of the difference can be found here:
OPC Wiki Greybacks vs. Whitebacks

Thanks very much for your time.

No they do not. I've tried 3 times to get them to label the flip with either Grey or White back, but they won't budge.
Unless they've changed their position on the matter in the last few months.

    Really? That is good news.
I love how they seem to change their policies very randomly.

This thread is worthless without scansimage I'll have to change that.

Interesting! Do you have a scan of it? I'm curious to see how they delineate the label.

    Good stuff!
So they don't mark it on the label, though?

Firedawg says that they do NOW. When I subbed my cards they did not, and told me they would not label the fip.

Just heard back from PSA customer service. They said they DO now delineate greybacks... they have only just graded the one Pete Rose card up until now. She said to make sure you note the greyback status on the submission form.
Looks like player collectors now have another variation to add!

I've got to think that my Ryan, Brett, and Yount are now significantly more valuable. I may have to send in a few to get re-holdered.

Interesting I would be interested in a nm mt Ryan if any body has one that is nicely centered.
I can never reall get this straight was it 80 or 81 that the OPC factory was on strike? I always
thought it was early 81 so it affected the 80/81 OPC Hockey season but did it go long enough
    to affect the Baseball season?

From what I understand, it was 1980 but I'm planning on heading to London Ontario sometime soon to dig around the library to find a definitive answer. It's been bugging me too.

From the London Public Library's reference desk:

The employees of O-Pee-Chee did indeed go on strike on August 10, 1980 and they remained out for one month. The main issue in the dispute were the wages. The London Free Press articles which I consulted - August 11, 12 and September 8, 1980 - did not allude to any impact that the strike may have had on production.

I don't think they would have been producing baseball cards in August. So, perhaps the strike only affected Hockey cards.

What would say a COMPLETE Grey Back set would be worth compared to the regular?

I am wondering because I think I know someone that has one of those!

    Thanks in advance.

I have these for awhile now. The Rose I have had for over a year, the Bench I subbed about 6 months ago. So they have been doing the Rose this way for atleast the last 2 years that I have been working on the Rose master set. Mark

Look what I picked up under the radar from the Dimitri Young Collection. It's a POP3, but I doubt the other two are gray backs.

Thanks Mark. I've been planning on having it re-holdered to get rid of "Dimitri Young Collection" and getting the "Gray Back" notation. What does everyone think?

If it was in my collection I would. I just personally think in the long run, it would sell/get more money if it is easier for people to know what it is, rather than who previously owned it. Just my 2 cents. Mark

I would say double, but they rarely go up for sale so who knows.
I have 2 grey back sets, and 3 white back sets.

    I agree.

Also, I noticed it was the grey back when it was in auction even though nothing was said about it.
    Great card!

Just curious - does anyone have the story about why PSA wouldn't distinguish greybacks before, or why they changed their mind?
To the best of my knowledge, PSA won't distinguish greybacks for 1973 hockey (a much more prominent OPC) set.
Just curious how one(s) got PSA to recognize these as distinct variations?
