Why Vest Pocket Coin Dealers Drink

So I get an email from a guy saying he has a rare USA gold coin that he figures is worth $6000, but he'll generously sell it to me for half. I go through the spiel of asking for a date/mintmark, photos and explain briefly about condition, price guides, TPGs, etc.

He writes back

"This coin is very rare so the price guides ive researched all say that even in circulated grades this coin is worth 6000. Had it been in uncirculated condition it would be worth more than double that. I am not interested in investing time or money into certifying this coin by a third party. I am not interested in getting full market value for it either. I hope you understand i am not out to scam anyone or waste your time"

And attached is this photo.....

I threw their junk mail in garbage years ago. I don't even fool with these people. I do run a craigs list ad and if the caller can't describe what he has - date, denom, I just hang up.

Heck, that one isn't worth a soda pop. The ones where you need the hard stuff is when you get a call to make an offer on a "huge collection of VERY high-end" silver, gold and platinum coins.
And the folks seem genuine and sincere. (Ultimatly, they were. Just misguided)
And they insist we meet at a secure location. (my bank)

Yep. Plated Statehood quarters. 10 sets of each year to 2007. Even had the invoices showing what was paid.

    That was a Dewars night.

And on the other side of the proverbial coin, there's the heartbreaking emails like this one. All she had to do was email me back to set up an appointment and I'd likely have been able to give her more than twice what she ended up getting from this likely scoundrel image

"Sorry for not responding sooner, have a three year old that is very busy.

I was in desperate need of money and a guy showed up at the door and purchased all for $800. I looked up some of the coins on line, before and after he left...and even because of the silver content etc, he got a much better deal than I did. I feel like I was severely ripped off...but what can you do when your mortgage is about to bounce?
    ...
I also sold him all of my gold rings etc...all for the $800. I think I could have gotten more at a pawn shop. Oh well, my loss
    ...
He basically told me that no one was in the market anymore for old coins, except to melt down for the silver
    ...
He sells the coins on line, and I was saddened to see that the coins I sold him for $800, he was asking well over $2600 for.

When my mom passes, I'll seek you out first...as I'm pretty sure by your earlier response that you wouldn't want them just for the silver.

Thank you so much for your time and patience."

i'd hand him $6,000 for it and tell him i'm from "the isle of bradley"
if he asked about who "milton bradley" was on those notes i just gave him...i'd simply reply that's our president matey
