What is the most popular year to collect in all of Nimistmatics?

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,750 ✭✭✭✭✭
I would venture it is 1909 due mainly to the 1909-S VDB cent, but also because that year is rich in history and coin varieties and type.

What year would you venture is not necessarily the most relevant but rather the most popular, and why?

Unfortunately you are probably right but it isn't justified. >>

A related question: What do you think the most popular year should be? image

    Well probably not 1933

That could possibly qualify for: What is the most popular year to collect for allegedly-illegal coins in all of Numismatics?

This year is probably my second vote given:

    (1) Last year of 0.900 fine silver
    (2) First year of JFK half
    (3) Coins are generally less expensive and thus more accessible than 1909 and other key dates
    (4) 1964-D Peace / Franklin fantasy over-struck coins image

I tend to agree with the 1964 answer, but 1878 may rank up there. First year of the Morgan dollar, and an unbelievable number of registry required Vams are 1878.

Well, by all rights it probably should be 1792. It would be a very small collection, but what a collection it would be!

There are a few "years" where we could say collecting was "popularized".
1916 is one year where the change in coinage made for an interesting and probably fascinating time for "collectors". There was the standing liberty quarter and the liberty head quarter, along with the dimes. Of course, who could have known the quarter and half that year, along with that lowly winged liberty head dime from Denver would command such attention in higher grades, later ?
With as many Morgan Dollars as there were vs. Peace Dollars and limited amount of enough collector coins remaining for collectors of Mercury dimes and Walking Liberty halves subsequent to that year, 1921 also makes for a good arguement as being the most popular year....But, I will stick with "this year" for the reasons previously stated. There is no time like the present.

    I'm partial to these dates ... 1847, 1861, 1889, 1891, 1917, 1921 and 1947

My immediate reaction to the question was going to be 1909 as well.

    Mine too!

It was the start of the WLH, Mercs & SLQs.

Two of those issues have key dates in those years 1916 SLQ & 1916-D Merc.

    That was a GREAT year!

I also like the 1916-S Walkers!!

I might go with 1916. You have the start of the new coin era with many coin series getting going. This is overlapped by Lincolns and Buffalos.

  • I vote for 1968-1969. There are 4 reverse design varieties (including 2 proof only) for the 1968 S proof quarters. These same 4 plus another one show up on the 1969 D circulation strike quarters. I know of no other modern coins with as many varieties within a given year.

My guess is 2011, only since the 2012s aren't universally well-distributed yet. There's lots of kids out there sorting through pocket change. In response to the OP's actual question, I like 1921.

I'm sticking with 1909 for now image

Not only are there over a dozen different cent varieties to collect from that year, the Barber coins are cool and the gold designs are just awesome. Also lots of key dates and a few really tough coins if you're going for them all.

I also think the first year of the type is the one most desirable to collect. I only wish those years were less expensive, especially 1807 for Capped Bust Half Dollars.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

1909 is probably the answer if we're looking at the sheer # of people (Lincoln cent and end of the Indian cent).

But 1916 probably covers a lot more territory with the end of the Barbers, and beginning of the SLQ's, Mercs, and Walkers.

My popular years are 1848, 1858, and 1867.
