Questionable 1877 Indian on Ebay

The member ATS are of the opinion this is a counterfeit.

The seller has posted some smug remarks about it, insisting it is genuine. Most people would be appreciative about being informed if they have a questionable item for sale, this one is not.

This coin has an altered date AND a bold "N" reverse and is definitely fake. I sent the seller a message, and reported it to eBay.

Edited to add: The seller contacted me and stated he would remove the listing.

I sent him a message about the 1909-S as well.

By the way, for those of you who come across counterfeit coins, at least for Indian cents, you can donate counterfeits to the Fly-In Club in care of Rick Snow for educational purposes. He will give you a receipt for your donation in the amount of what you paid for the coin, which you can then use as a tax write off. Rick brings the counterfeits to our Fly-In Club meetings, usually at the ANA and FUN shows, to help educate club members on how to detect counterfeit coins.

  • Its a good idea Penny Lady , but how do you get these ? I was told in no uncertain terms it's illegal and i think a fed offense to even put one in the mail. Im not 100% on the fed part but the illegal part was very clear.

Every now and then, a customer will bring me a coin they are not sure is authentic, or sometimes I find them on the bourse. As I'm sure you know, there are some very well made counterfeits, and some obvious ones. The more you can examine in hand, the better you will be able to detect the fake ones.

Of course it is illegal to sell counterfeit coins, but the ones the club maintains are taken out of the market place, and are strictly used for educational purposes.

I sent him a note asking him if the two 9s were the same, as they should be identical.

He ended the auction. Another ebay seller that got taken by someone, I presume, as
coins are not his main field of income.

Thanks PL , yes i do know how good the fakes are , i posted a fake here about a year or more ago and it passed with flying colors , was even attributed as an R7. Id agreed to send it to a member gratis and was inundated with PM's telling me what the law was and id be breaking the law.If you ever do a Philly show give me a heads up would you ? Since those days i also came across a shield nickel fake , these are known fakes but i wouldnt have known , it's that good.Coincidently there's a thread up today about a shield nickel , ive seen them and they are damn near perfect , even the weight is right.I think i have spotted one thing that gives some of them away but not all.

This makes sense, but if this is true then why are some posters afraid HR 5799 will hamper their abilities to buy and sell counterfeit coins? image

    Auction is no longer running.
    When in doubt, don't.
