1994 Flair Baseball Series 2 Case - To break or not break?

I purchased an 18-ct 1994 Flair Baseball Series 2 case. Should I keep sealed or crack it open? The key card is the AROD rookie, but there is also the Wave of the Future A-Rod and Hot Gloves insert.

I don't have any experience opening this product, does anyone know if the distribution was consistent? There are 200 cards in series 2, each box has 216 cards, so I expect at least 1 A-rod per box.

I don't recall hearing about any short-printing, or over-printing, of the base cards in this product. Collation should be pretty much straightforward, but there are always variations in a random system. I remember base Fleer boxes in the early 90s were very reliable for producing perfect collation, but I don't know if Flair was the same.

As to whether or not you should rip, I always tell people to rip, because that's what they're there for. In fact, send it to me and I'll handle that chore for you

But seriously, if you want to hold onto it for appreciation purposes, there are worse products, depending on what you paid for it. Boxes came out at around $75, IIRC, and they went up over $100 with the Hot Gloves getting, er, hot, and then A-Rod broke out. But prices have dropped way down. Blowout has boxes available for $35, though a sealed case should bring a premium. The inserts are pretty soft, and BGS 9.5/PSA 10s A-Rods are selling for around $75-80, so it's not quite the gold mine it used to be. Production was low for the day, but high for today. So I say break it, and start a graded set. They are sweet cards.

I would break them out. Like others stated, the Arod cards have cooled off a bit. I was lucky enough to have the 3rd and 4th graded BGS 9.5 #340 (I think) and Wave of the Future cards way back when. I sold one for over $1000 at the time. Those were the good ol' days.

Thanks guys. How hard is it to get a PSA 10 A-Rod? Most of the problems I have seen are with the backs. These cards are so thick that it looks like the blade didn't make it all the way through. Assuming I get 18 A-Rods, I would need at least 8 PSA 10's to make it worthwhile.

how many packs is 18 boxes?? The Waves of the Future pulled one in every 5 and there are only 10 in the set....thats not
bad odds for a 50 dollar Arod, not to mention the chance at the base rc...me thinks you need to rip...here and now!

neenish - 23 A-Rod out of 15 boxes. Not bad. I take it that you use BGS? How did you do on the BGS 9.0?

There's not a whole lot Arod can do to make those cards go up in value and it's a little too late for any of the other rookies in the set to break out. I say open because it's fun and you don't stand to lose a lot in value in terms of putting it away for investment purposes. If I recall they're not all that condition sensitive so it's possible to get a 10 or two out of the case.

I got about $35-$45 on the 9's. I used BGS in the old days, before seeing the light and have been using PSA and SGC ever since.

Bust 'em up! These were very nice looking cards. Don't forget that Arod is 'already' only 100 home runs shy of 500 for his career. So, barring injury, he can make a legitimate run at the record and he's NEVER been mentioned as one of the guys that potentially 'juiced' up. Although the '94 SP would be the winner of any price appreciation, if it happens.

Now that we know about AROD, should I rip this case or keep it to see if AROD makes a run at Bonds. I expect to pull a least 20 Arods from the case.

I'd rip it - I don't see that the product will be all that more available in the future if you were to keep it sealed.

Open it, I opened a case a short time ago, pulled a bunch of ARod rookies and wave of the future psa 10's. Also got a bunch of unopened packs with his cards on front. I think it made more than if I had sold unopened boxes or held on to it.

I got a good chuckle out of that old comment as well. My how times have changed.

I may try to complete the Hot Gloves insert in PSA 10.
