Spot check on my hoard of 2011 25th anniversary set Eagles and....

I have 16 PCGS first strike and 6 NGC early release 2011 5 coin sets. 14 of the PCGS coins (17%) and one NGC coin (3%) have developed spots - two with the classic white milk spots and the rest have small beige toning spots or circles. I would guess that the beige toning spots can be conserved/removed .Since these are all ms/pr 70's, I will send the coins in soon to PCGS. The last time I checked the coins was April of this year and these coins were fine. Interesting but maybe not statistically relevant the two sets of PCGS 69's are fine(so far).
This is pretty depressing. Once I get the coins back from PCGS, I will post an update. Please post your experience with your 25th ASE 's

I'm very interested in following your experience with this situation. I too have silver coins like you're describing, but am more concerned about red spots and copper toning on modern gold PCGS graded coins. One is a $5 MOH in a FSPR69 holder and another is the 1995-W $5 gold Torch Runner in PR70.I will look forward to your updates.TY
<< <i>I had red spots develop on three 08w gold buffalos- PCGS removed the spots on all three and they retained their pr70 grades. >>
Ok ty,that's good news. Did you submit them under "Guarantee Resubmission"? Can you elaborate on turnaround time, fees, etc.?

I have maintained all along that there are 2 different types of spots on these. The white spots are due to silver chloride and have been present since the mint started washing planchets with hydrochloric acid back in 1921. The beige or tea colored spots are due to something else [maybe the powdered rinsing agent, kind of like the Jet Dry that you use in your home dishwasher]. The beige spots are the ones that I believe can be removed with acetone, the white ones are permanento! I wonder if the mint used demineralzed/deionized water or tap water.

<< <i>I thought PCGS now charges a fee for spot review. Not sure. >>
They do, I paid 25 for each review when I sent some in recently. Coins came back great.
<< <i>When I sold some ASEs in April on E bay with minor spots- two 2001w burnished and one proof (not set coins) - I was hammerered on the final price. The Ms70 coins had light beige spots and the proof had faint white spots (disclosed in descriptions) All three coins sold for an average of sixty bucks before fees and postage. So if spot review is $25 now then it's better than giving the coins away on EBay. At this rate maybe I can wait a while and send all 16 sets in for a bulk rate discount. (joke before someone posts there is no bulk discount for spot removal) >>
I think you should call PCGS to see what your options are. I did spot review but you may have another way of doing grade guarantee. Mine were Morgans and the grade was likely correct. Your 70's are a different story.

<< <i>I am not too familiar with the types of spots on the ASE series as I typically sell coins before noticing any developing spots. However, I have a bunch of pre-2000 ASEs that have developed some spot toning (redish/brown in color) and are numerous - look like freckles. They are typically near the edges of the coins on both the front and back. Some of these have a shot at PR70/PF70 if not for this toning. It is hard to see with the naked eye but is certainly evident with a 6x loupe (in fact if you look very hard and know that they are there, you will be able to make it out with the naked eye also). Are these spots something that might be helped with a acetone rinse?

If the coins aren't in holders it shouldn't be that hard to try an acetone rinse.
