The "misery loves company" adage, to me, describes a situation where a person has a tendency to want to communicate to others about his or her misfortune [be it a one time bad incident the person experiences or be it the person's daily existence which is filed with one bad experience after another]. This may be done to obtain sympathy or pitty from others, or it may be done to share the person's misery with others [since he/she may think that it is not fair that other persons are not in the same boat that he/she is].
It is interesting to see forumites participate in threads and have the tenor of their posts and replies regularly be negative and/or critical.
Some of the persons who played on the Open Forum years ago displayed this style constantly, to the point where one would think "If it is so bad around here, why do you even bother to log on and post when you could be doing other things that are fun/enjoyable."

to avoid getting too far away from the subject matter, i would like to express my thoughts, which are, i dont believe people hate the hobby, any negativity expressed here may be nothing more than a misdirection of energy. or maybe a response that was taken out of context or misunderstood.
regardless of how many posts I have, I don't consider myself an "expert" at anything
Oh well! I just PMd ebaybuyer to thank him for his service! Now I'm beginning to get more enlightened here. Cliqueishness(sp?) can easily lead to misunderstandings. I will no longer have any part of it,ty!
Do you only want to have "yes" men(could be read as suck-ups) around you? Is not a disenting opinion in a sea of kool-aid perhaps a good thing? I dont really spend that much time on this or any forum, and I really cannot recall many if any posts or posters that hate coins and coin collecting but mabey I just missed them. Interesting this thead is.
Why do people who despise the hobby post on the forum?
I can't speak for anyone else, but I love the hobby and there are still plenty of things about it that I loathe. And I see no reason to limit my comments here to one side of the coin or the other.

I understand and agree with the OP's post. He is certainly not saying there should never be disagreements or anything among coin collectors - just why do some people who don't collect or just seem to hate all aspects of collecting bother to come and stay here? Just like I have little or no interest in motorcycles, but don't go to motorcycle forums and bash purchases, etc, etc.

I don't believe there's anyone who posts here who hates coins or the hobby. "You may think that is funny, but we are on a COIN FORUM!! "
To me that reference was in direct relation to the subject as to why do people do certain things. Because they can. And what a great freedom it is to be able to voice our opinions just because we can.
My thread is not about having a negative opinion on one or more aspects of the coin hobby. It's not about being free to speak your mind on a subject. It's about people that clearly do not like the coin hobby who come here and persistently hate on the whole thing. It would be like me being an active participant in a Baltimore Ravens forum. Sure, nothing would stop me, but it makes no sense...unless I wanted to mess with the Ratbird fans.
Hey jedm....,back off! And I agree with RYK wholeheartedly. Last time I checked freedom of speech and assembly does NOT give you the right to yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater. Also, try to remember that we are all really in the living room of Don Willis. If you have any complaints,I suggest you take them up with the owner of the house that you're now in! No smiley face!

IMO......Some people are just really unhappy with themselves. They live very sad lives and are in a lot of emotional pain because they feel so bad and suffer from really low self esteem. The only release they seem to get is from lashing out at others, attacking things, creating conflict. They thrive on confrontation like it's a drug. Forums are largely anonymous so they tend to show up in them to get their jollies. It's strange and pathetic and I've learned to largely ignore them until they simply get bored and go away. You see it in every walk of life, our hobby and this Forum aren't any different. It is beyond me why anyone in their right mind would post on a Forum related to a topic they DO NOT like. Seems really foolish to me. Just sayin'
Fortunately, the vast majority of the rest of us aren't like them. Just my 2 cents.
BTW....I have loved coins my entire 44 year life, find most collectors to be exceedingly interesting and kind people, and read about 100 posts here for every one I make
It would be like me being an active participant in a Baltimore Ravens forum. Sure, nothing would stop me, but it makes no sense...unless I wanted to mess with the Ratbird fans.
In the example, wouldn't you still be a baseball fan. Wouldn't that be more akin to posting on the PCGS forum even though you loathed them.

I just enjoy posting. There's a little something for everyone in coins. Some people really dig their Morgans. Some their wheat cents. Some , their gold. I pulled this coin from eBay after it created a stir with a few "interested" parties. They said, "You should have a third party grader look at it. It's acid treated".
A previous poster suggested I should be on a 3rd or 4th drink by now. That reminds me of my last post.
This guy runs into the bar in a panic. He says "Bartender, quick... pour me up ten shots". The bartender does so and the patron starts slamming them down. After the 3rd or 4th, the bartender says to the man, "slow down". The guy continued on three more and says : "Bartender, if you had what I had , you'd be slamming them down, too". The bartender now feels bad. The guy finishes the last shot when the bartender says, "I'm sorry sir. Whatcha got ?" The patron pulls out 3 statehood quarter and says , "Seventy five cents".
Morning is always a great time for reflection. As I think about the OP, it reminds me of the view I've long held of those who are uninterested in moderns but who find modern coin posts irresistible. I always wondered why people who hate them post to threads about them. For many years, it was impossible to start a modern thread here without critics immediately joining to tell the collectors how silly they were. Similarly, modern collectors were roundly criticized by the elites in the hobby. A certain spelling-challenged dealer used to routinely criticize them in her blog. Jon Albanese offered the following regarding moderns: The grading services should either immediately cease slabbing modern and bullion coins, or issue strong black-box warning labels on all of this trash. It should read something like, "This slab is harmful to your financial health and should be purchased for amusement purposes only". However, PCGS supported the modern community through the creation of set registries, modern tier grading, etc.; a decision I believe expands the hobby and is in its' long-term best interest. PCGS support for moderns was a talking point against them among certain in the dealer community--evidence they were damaging the hobby. Ironically, the same principals of the 4th party service who criticized the modern community have now become familiar enough with them to start certifying Ikes. Go figure. They certainly seemed to despise one part of the hobby, yet frequently posted about them on this forum.
The same is true for those who foment angst regarding PCGS on this message board. PCGS critics (and the lackeys who carried their water) have often openly criticized all aspects of their service here, working to create as much angst regarding PCGS as possible in order to create demand for additional 4th party solutions. At one point, the level of energy dedicated to creating this angst was so great that critics and their alts (i.e. SageRed...how childish) seemed bent on destroying the PCGS message board, an important resource for the community. I support PCGS, as they support my collecting interests. I suppose the actors discussed in my commentary believe they are champions of the hobby, and are acting on those passions. I don't believe they despise the hobby. I collect 20th century coins, and post to the forum using my real name. I don't have an alt. I I am passionate about them, and believe I am a championing the hobby. I suppose each have our own truths and motivations for posting here. I doubt any post here out of malice or dislike of the hobby. The board will be what we make it. Threads meant to gossip about the motivations of other posters are themselves meant to foment angst. This place is remarkably civil relative to other message boards catering to other fields of human interest. One could almost say it is so civil that it at times is dull and boring (could you imagine forcing a non collector to participate on the US Coin Forum for a month; talk about cruel and unusual punishment).

Almost any subject will do. Of course I don't have too many "conventional" opinions.
While I see quite a bit of opinions being challenged here it is usually objective and not motivated by immaturity. I think this is a great forum. Of the half dozen or so forums I visit, in my opinion there are others where closed mindedness expressed in the form of negativity is the norm if it involves something that the regulars are not actively involved in..... this is really ot one of them.
