What's the most you have "over-sniped" or "over-bid" a card you needed or wanted
What is the most you have "over-sniped" or "over-bid" a card on Ebay? I just set a record for myself. It was a very pleasant surprise!
I needed a Mark McGwire Refractor card for my Cardinals team set run. I have been looking for that card for over 18 months. I finally found one available on Ebay. At first, I sniped it for $77+. A day later, I changed the snipe to $101+. I finally changed it yesterday to $201+........ drum roll please.....
..... I got the card for $9.54
I was really happy! No, I didn't think the card would go that high, but I had to be sure. Actually, I thought the card would go for $30 to $50 because there are a bunch of McGwire collectors out there.

Recently there was a Jose Canseco lot up for grabs on eBay. The lot included almost 600 cards and they were non duplicates. Also came with an auto and tons of odd ball hard to come by cards. So the starting bid was set at 9.99. I was eying the auction for all 5 days and then in the last couple of minutes, still not 1 bid. I believe it was the way the seller titled the auction because Canseco stuff still sells pretty good for the most part. Anyways, I placed a bid in the last seconds for $40. Shipping was already at $20 so that would of been $60 total. Only reason I put for 40 was because there wasn't any bids in the last few seconds. I would of gone up to $80.
Turns out I won the auction for the starting price of $9.99 plus $20 shipping. I was super stoked. Once I got the cards (which came in a binder which was completely full, in the 3rd to last page - There was a 1991 Donruss elite card in Mint condition! I just sold the Elite card for $42 so not only did I get that Canseco lot for free but I also put some extra chump change back in my pocket.

And yeah, then I discovered that Fidrych had a 1978 Saga disc. Still have not seen one offered for sale. I'm really not sure why I care--those discs are fugly--but I've run out of other Fidrych cards to buy.
<< <i>$0, I'm old school apparently. I bid my max, including cost of s/h, whenever I find a card I want...that's it. >>
I'm pretty much the same way. I wait until less than 10 seconds before the auction is about to end and bid my max, and if I don't get it then it wasn't meant to be mine.

Why not just snipe. It does the exact same thing, except you don't have to time your bids.

I disagree. There was nothing cumpulsive about my snipe. I thought it through, and did it on purpose. I was perfectly willing to pay what I sniped if need be. Yes, I did change my snipe, but I thought it through.
