Toned Coin Vs White Coin Debate

I have a friend who loves toned coins. I love them as well, but I can also appreciate a nice well struck brilliant white coin too. We recently had a friendly discussion about the subject and wanted to see what people here think.

The way the discussion went, many toned coins get a "bump" in grade due to the eye appeal. White coins dont have that toning option and have to earn the TPG based on traditional criteria. Does this mean that white coins are technically better coins?? Lets hear the comments!

    FWIW, i have always thought that HRH and PCGS appreciated strong luster and brilliant white coins to a higher degree than other TPG's and reward such coins accordingly.

    For a toned coin to carry a premium because of the toning the toning has to be attractive and has to complement the overall eye appeal. Because a coin is simply toned or has "original skin" does not itself justify a premium asking price. Actually more often than not toning is a liability.

    With that being said all you need are the right chemicals to make any coin untoned and looking at blast white after blast white coin is the perfect method of curing insomnia.

    FWIW - I feel PCGS like blast white too much and clean fields not enough. And they are hard on coins with toning and original skin.

    My sentiments exactly. Nice toning is often in the eye of the beholder, and we don't often agree what is worth extra money.
    I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

    I love vibrant blast white coins, but I hate overdipped lifeless white coins.

    I love "wow" soft, natural, subtle toners, but I hate ugly "corroded" coins.

    Not all blast white coins are great. Not all toned coins are great. I am gaining a tremendous appreciation for "interesting" coins. Softly rim-toned coins with tremendous underlying luster are becoming my favorites. These tend to not photograph well unless you really know how to do it, but they really pop in-hand.

    No, SOME toned coins get a bump up. There are also some toned coins that are bumped down in grade because of toning that decreases eye appeal.
    PCGS, a few years ago as I recall, placed images on its website to illustrate what types of toning would span the -1 to +1 grade adjustment due to toning.
    Furthermore, in some cases, the toning is so impacted that the surface appears damaged, with a predictable grading result.

    i really dont care for toning but if it looks good and neat but not fugly (an over abundance of toning) im fine with it.

    To me its all about eye appeal,wow toners,and wow black and white DMPLs and DCAMs do it for meimage
    Great coins are not cheap,and cheap coins are not great!

    Personally I'm not a big fan of tarnish, and imo the huge fuss that collectors have made over all the "moose"/"monster" coins has led to the huge increase in doctoring coins. I put much more importance on original surfaces over color. As to your question yes sometimes coins do receive a bump or get market graded if the colors are considered nice or star/plusworthy, this just makes the doctors want to do more and get better at AT.

    White n' nice!! Toning/eye appeal, per HRH it adds a little and forgives a lot.

    Not so white. At least toners offer variety. All nice white coins are pretty much the same.

    Series 52 refers to Morgan dollars and not a specific set.

    I am not a big fan of toning - when I did Morgans and SLQ's I liked them w/o toned surfaces.
