Assumptions and Entitlements

Do any of these remind you of anybody you know? image

You assume you are the dealer’s only or most important customer.
You assume you know how to grade.
You assume any coin you buy is worth the price you paid
You assume your coins will increase in value.
You assume others like what you like.
You assume prices listed in a guide apply to all coins in a given grade.

You believe you are entitled to first shot on anything you want.
You believe you are entitled to a discount.
You believe you are entitled to sell or trade coins on a bourse floor during a show even though you aren’t a dealer.
You believe you are entitled to a green or gold bean on all your coins because, after all, they’re your coins.
You believe you are entitled to full retail value when you sell.
You believe you are entitled to do anything you want to your coin.

I'm sure there are more...

I think I've seen a few of those fellows in the mirror from time to time.

Ahh, honesty...it's so refreshing to see.

I think technically one is entitled to do whatever they want to their coins.

I only ascribe to one of these tenets, but in the proper context, I feel pretty strongly about it and so would you. image

No to most, but I'm often asked if I have anything to sell when walking up to a dealers table. What am I supposed to do - lie?? image

You assume you are the dealer’s only or most important customer. Nope...not in this hobby, anyway. Back in the mid-2000s a dealer in another hobby came out and told us that we kept them in buisness, no longer in that hobby though. I do miss the hobby but it got too darn expensive!
You assume you know how to grade. Honestly, that doesn't mean much to me. I have not put in much effort in learning it, but I don't put much stock in assigning numbers to things. Unless it's assinging it a number based on the order it joined the collection. Hello, OCD!
You assume any coin you buy is worth the price you paid I would like to hope so, I'd hate to think I was over-paying
You assume your coins will increase in value. Couldn't care less. Literally, I couldn't care less if you paid me to care less.
You assume others like what you like. I know they do but I wish they didn't- it would allow me to get more of what I like!
You assume prices listed in a guide apply to all coins in a given grade. I would have, maybe, some day long ago, but I've been collecting various hobbies and been on message boards for enough time to know that isn't the case.

You believe you are entitled to first shot on anything you want. I wish!
You believe you are entitled to a discount. Ditto!
You believe you are entitled to sell or trade coins on a bourse floor during a show even though you aren’t a dealer. Nope, I wouldn't aquire something if I didn't plan to keep it. My duplicates aren't interesting enough that anybody but me would want them in the first place.
You believe you are entitled to a green or gold bean on all your coins because, after all, they’re your coins. Or you could just flush your money down the drain.
You believe you are entitled to full retail value when you sell. See two replies up. Why buy something if you don't want it?
You believe you are entitled to do anything you want to your coin. Yes. As long as it's not illegal. That doesn't mean that some things SHOULD be done, however.

I'm sure there are more... >>
