Did I miss something on this closed eBay auction?

Why did it close so high? My older Greysheet has ask at $125 in AU. If you look at the bid history, the winning bidding was even willing to go higher.

Wait, you're trying to figure out why certain things happen on eBay? Good luck!

    .
i didn't look it up but i bet 99% it is some type of vam

i've seen many an auction for common stock bring 5-20x what the person was expecting

would love to be there to see their face.

happened to me on a couple items i sold where they were imaged well enough for pickers to see what they were, despite my not knowing

and afterward i would research my item to see why it sold so high. i've never held out the items, i was actually happy to see the large premiums despite my ignorance

That second "C" looks a little off.
  • Why are so many of the bid amounts repeated? There are at least half a dozen in the bid history.
Let's try not to get upset.
  • Could there be something with the tail feathers? I'm guessing two people think they see a VAM or something...

I agree with those that said the bidders probably saw a vam in the pic.

there may be other reasons, but the reason i know is when a top bidder increases their bid it will show the same amount again

so if you see it 4 times in a row it is because the top bidder increased their own max bid 4 times :-)

you can do it as many times as you desire

  • I don't see anything unusual. I thought all the tail-feather and reverse of 1878/1879 varieties are for the Philly mint, not CC, or did I mis-read? PCGS price guide puts it around $135 retail, so it's a little high, but not out of the ballpark, is it?

Looks like a plain old-fashioned eBay bidding war between to collectors who simply HAD to have the coin.
As suggested, it could be they see a scarce VAM variety but I don't know since I don't collect Morgans.
