<< <i>On the 1807 Capped Bust Half, (and the 1808) the eagle looks different than on later date pieces. >>
i need some backup this time. my authentication skills seems a bit off today
the stars and date look off on the >>>1807<<< cbh.
>>>1821<<<
>>>1823<<<
the >>>1848<<< seated dollar looks bad to me.
i'm going to go with "they are all Counterfeit" for 200 Alex
.
i'm probably just being paranoid, but i really don't like these large cents either. darn scans must be throwing me off today
1821 Coronet
1823 Coronet
1826 Coronet

good job bringing this to our attention. i've found many coins that are bad, including some that have sold.
i've added them all to my database

The reverse die on the 1821 being sold looks suspiciously like the reverse die on the 1807. Just goes to “prove” how long dies lasted at the Philadelphia Mint!
Good catch!
<< <i>The suspect auctions have been pulled but how about this 1823 large cent???
good job questioning that cent. i have the link in one of my posts in this thread along with several others.
i didn't link the images since i was unable to do so with a couple of the listings
.
after seeing all the problems with the coins listed, i just reported all the USA coins.
if the person is honest, let this be a lesson. if they are not, i hope they all get nuked.

What was the 'tell' on the 1823? I do not see the obv cud at 11 o'clock, that I think all genuine 1823 N2's should have....

a very common trait amongst counterfeit coins is their "smooth dusty" surfaces. they are simply too nice
from my experience a gold coin pre-1900 with no dings, bangs, luster breaks etc has a 85% chance of being counterfeit. our gold just got banged up.
same applies to large cents and many other series. if it is too smooth to be true....

to expand on some counterfeit detection diagnostics:
many counterfeits have too shallow a relief. it is simply too expensive to create the relief our coins had, explaining all the cracks, cuds and die switching in our first 100 years of coinage.
relief for coins costs 1 of 2 things and most times both:
1. quantity (dies fail faster the higher the relief and less coins can be struck and/or exceed mint tolerances for quality)
2. quality (the higher the relief, the less coins a die will strike before failing and exceeding mint standards)
and last but not least, planchet quality/composition is not financially achievable for most of the simple-minded, lazy #$(*#*(%# counterfeiters, thank God !
