What's going on here?

With all the talk going on in the Hot Topics Legend thread about coin doctoring I am wondering if anyone can give an educated opinion about what might be going on here in between the arrows and above the eagles left wing? Is this toning or is it putty or is it dip residue that wasn't properly rinsed off? Thanks for your replies. reverse of 1844-D $2.50

i am not 100% if i am looking where you are but i see what appears to be a significant gouge above the eagles left wing.
the spaces between the arrow shafts and around the termination of the twig above/below is just part of the die surface. you will see this a lot on pl/dmpl morgans in between certain parts where the pl/dmpl has gone away or was never there and has a "matte" look. there are 3 possible things that cause this, but all of them from the natural process. i normally do not see that on business strike gold so maybe i am mistaken and it is a compound that simply has not been removed which is seen on many cleaned/puttied coins
.
ok, we are looking at the same spots.
it is my opinion FROM THE IMAGES that it is just from where the die was poor surfacing, either chipped away, crud accumulation preventing smooth striking or was never good to start with.
thing type of thing is actually quite common to see on coins with surfaces like this gold, silver. if you look at a lot of dmpl/pl type coins, maybe even some proofs from mass-production you will see that the dies are very prone to problems in these "in-between" spots. a lot of pressure is there and the dies can only handle so much, even from striking gold.
