Anybody? I haven't seen a Compugrade slab in at least ten years. Are there any still out there??

Jim Diffenthal, a New Orleans businessman, was responsible for CG.

It was too advanced for its time.

As I remember, it had the technology to remember a coin and not grade it differently, whether it came back as toned or brilliant. Kind of like fingerprints.

I believe that PCGS bought the technology from him, but they never put it to use.

I wonder why?????

No your eyes are right, Compugrades' computer system did assign grades to 1 place after the decimal point. And like PCGS's Expert system it was supposed to be able to retain a digital "fingerprint" of the coin so that if the coin was resubmitted the system would recognize it.

Fascinating stuff. If the technology were ever fully developed and implemented it'd likely put a bit of a dent in the income of crackout artists.

And a dent in the income of the grading services which may be one of the reasons the computer grading was dropped.

Looks a lot nicer than 62 (even 62.7) in the images. What does the coin actually grade?

Two people not including myself think it could/should be closer to a 64. Very nice looking coin.
Slab is smaller and thicker than a PCGS one. I had never seen one so I pounced on it.

It is also labeled on the top so you can see it in a box which is kind of nice. You can also see the rim of the coin.

I'm not sure. I haven't seen enough to know. This is literally the only one I have ever seen in person.

Here is a couple ... and an advertising token.

I have set of "MS-63.X" Morgan dollars only missing the 63.7. When comparing the 63.0 through 63.9 coins one thing stands out ... their software didn't work that well. While "ahead of their time" (whatever that cliche means), computer grading needed a lot of work.

In the little I have read, I think that the ones with the decimal grades are more desirable. I don't know how much of a market there are for these. I would guess they are pretty rare but if no one collects them then it doesn't really matter. Glad I found one, it will go nicely in my old-school holder Morgan year set.

Got this one today. The slab is small like a white ANACS slab but much thicker.

Just picked up the sample on the right, 1967 Kennedy. Labels are different than the one to the left and as posted above. Bought it from a fellow that said he got it at the Seattle ANA in 1990.

Anyone have other different dates and styles??

I have seen peace dollars. Would love to get a saint. I would imagine the company dissolved before the technology could be applied to various denominations, I believe it dissolved due to internal conflict rather than poor product.
