1948 Leaf babe ruth jackie robinson ted williams leroy satchel paige HELP

Hey everyone, im new to this and i was at a yard sale recently and this old lady was selling boxes of baseball cards. At the bottom of the box i found an envelope that said really old cards and in it were these 1948 leaf gum baseball cards. I knew they were pretty good because i recongnized Babe ruth I have no real idea about old cards but i have the following

all say between 1948 and 1949

Babe ruth
ted williams
jackie robinson
joe di maggio
bob feeler
leroy paige
scott muller
stan musial

i want to sell them because i think they are worth some money espcially the babe ruth, but i called the place to see about grading and they said it would cost hundreds of dollars and i dont think the cards are in great shape.

im going to attach some pictures so please let me know if anyone is interested in buying them.
please give me a call 704-241-4367
thanks!

Can you post some scans? Could be fake cards.
  • yea im trying now
  • Which is more fake, the cards or the story? I'm going to have to go with the story, since a scan won't be needed.

Is a scam with a first post a record?
  • it keeps saying that the file is larger than 50 kb can i email them to you
  • haha im not trying to scam anyone ill be glad to send you the pics why do you think im trying to scam you

    This should be good.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."
  • Personally, I would have gone with storage unit find vs. yard sale find. Those are all the rage these days.
  • k ill do that now
  • Do we really need to see scans to know they're fake?
  • addicted2ebayaddicted2ebay Posts: 2,097 ✭✭✭✭
Cant say for sure but if it popped up on ebay as original what the hell I would take a chance.
  • i have sent the pics to a couple of card people on ebay and they seem to think they are real. i noticed that the pictures are not strait or there off center, the paper is a thicker heavier weight

Anyone who wants to spend serious on cards shown in a blurry scan, that are also heavily counterfeited, is a fool.

    Sun tea maybe...

There is a noticable cropping difference between the authentic card and his cards.Especially in the space between the hat and upper border.

Long story short, IF they are real, they are worth sending in to get authenticated (they won't get a numerical grade). Don't sell them until you know for sure. And it will not cost you hundreds of dollars to get authenticated. If anything, just send in one card. If it comes back authentic, send in the rest.
  • will do...but the guy said on some of my cards that i would cost over 150 bucks to do would it be worth it...i bought all this mess for 10 bucks and i dont want to be out 150 dollars if they are not real

  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,950 ✭✭✭✭
If you send in one card (if you're a member), it would cost you $15 per card, plus a one-time fee of $17.50 for return shipping.
  • Bad news....i just got word back from the guy at SGC that they are fakes. i sent him a real scan yesterday for him to just take a look and he theys they are no good.

    thanks for the thoughts though

As long as he doesn't say "give them to me, I'll throw them away for you". lol

Holy hell! Con artist Earl is now a mod on SGC. Man has that place gone down hill.
  • what do you mean??? is SGC not a good place to send them?

  • << <i>is SGC not a good place to send them? >>

    Since they're fake, no.

Sorry that old lady huckster fleeced you. Her ploy would have been more convincing if she had included some beater commons in the group. The chances of finding ANY 48 Leaf at a yard sale are remote, while the odds of finding the HIGHEST PRICED 48 Leaf altogether without beater commons, including the Paige SP (LOL!!) is beyond comprehension.

You should drop by her house tomorrow, ask to use her john, and do an upper decker, IMHO.
Kiss me once, shame on you.

The person claimed they were offered $200 for the lot! I would take that money so fast, it would make your head spin!!!
  • jeffcbayjeffcbay Posts: 8,950 ✭✭✭✭
He does say they aren't real in the description, so is it really against the rules? Strange...

He is saying he was offered $200 for them but Ebay won't let him run an auction so he wasn't able to take it? WTF!?!?!?! I would have taken that $200 so fast it would have made your head spin, and then bought 6 more fake Leaf cards and did it again!

So you would have knowingly sold fake cards and then bought more fake cards and sold them too knowing they were fake? Man I love the integrity in this hobby.

first off its funny how many ALWAYS say cards are fake w/o seeing them.....

2nd the cards are ALL from 1949, not 1948.

3rd, there are 2 variations of the Ruth card, one with the red lines on the L and R border where the uniform meets the border (scarcer), and one w/o these red lines (both variations have different shades of red, one is a darker red).
the most common reprint seen of the 1949 Leaf Ruth is based on the w/red line version (a card that is over 10X scarcer than the w/o red line variation), so there is a great chance these cards are ALL fake, besides the washed out look to all of them.

Dont spend $$ on getting them graded, until you know they are authentic, ......Id recommend buying a low grade common card then comparing the common to the group of cards you have. A fake will be made from a different card stock and the printing process, surface gloss, boldness of print etc. will be different.

FYI The Paige card is by far the best card in the bunch (if authentic, which I highly doubt), it sells for more than the rest of the cards combined.

As far as I know I was the first to point of this variation (on Net54 last year). Never seen the info before.

image Ya its badly registered (color alignment way off), but its the best scan I could find of a graded "w/red line" card.
