Hopefully our Summer Seminar folks aren't affected by the wildfires!

The Colorado wildfires are inching closer to Colorado Springs and our Summer Seminar friends.
While I doubt these fires will affect the Seminar happenings, it is disturbing to hear how out-of-control
these fires have grown this past month.

I did something on FB a couple days ago from an ANA person that said it was no problem. Not sure if the situation has changed since then.

Not in Colorado Springs, but from what I hear the fire is in the hills, you can see the smoke from the city. There are housing developments up in the hills that have been evacuated, and some tourist spots like Garden of the Gods, that have been closed. Not affecting the town.

I can see the smoke from the High Park Fire from my house, but that's 40 miles away.

After we came back from dinner, there was smoke all across the Colorado College campus. There is also a bit of a breeze, which is not good.

It's gotten worse - the smoke is really bad - awhile ago the rumors were
we'd have to evacuate. It's hotter than Hades - you can't breathe outside,
not exactly what I was expecting.

Still, it seems the fire is slowly moving away from us. Keeping my fingers
crossed, tomorrow a bunch of us are heading to a Rockies game; the trip
to Pike's Peak seems to be cancelled though.

That's worse than I thought, but hopefully it does get contained and put out rather than just moving somewhere else!

Currently there is a lot of particulate matter in the air. Those with breathing difficulties may struggle a bit. Be sure to bring your inhalers if you use them.

32,000 people have been evacuated north of Garden of the Gods Blvd. to the Air Force Academy and all homes west of I-25. Homes are now burning!

I have a best friend in Denver. Thank goodness the flammable material in the landscape is five miles away from Denver itself. He is not bothered by the fires. The fires should not be of concern for the ANA Summer Seminars.

Crackout's picture should put this in its proper perspective. While the fires are inconveniencing a few people enjoying a hobby, they are also destroying people's homes.

The ANA Summer Seminars are not in Denver---they are in Colorado Springs, on the campus of Colorado College. I am there now, and today the fires looked much worse. Homes are burning in the NW part of the city, and the Air Force Academy was evacuated. It was breezy today, and the fire is out of control.

Crusoe and I are both here as YN's at the Summer Seminar. We probably won't need to evacuate (hopefully) but we're definitely on edge right now.

A couple of my friends have homes out there in the mountains.

I'm almost certain one of their homes has unfortunately already burned down,
and my other friend was one of the new 32,000 to evacuate image

The fires continue. Colorado Springs smells like a campsite. In addition to many homes, the Flying W Ranch burned last night. It's a sad day.

Oh No!! I went to the Flying W Ranch a few years ago at the Seminar, GREAT FOOD

This is the first summer since 2005 I wont be going to the Seminar due to another trip, I guess I picked a good year not to go.

Since many of the attendees are in the "MS" range of years and have health concerns, be sure to check with your local physician to make sure you have what you need if traveling to Colorado Springs ... especially if you have respiratory concerns. There is particulate matter in the air and you may even consider going to your local pharmacy or hardware store and getting a mask for when you are outside.

Classes are inside, but you travel back and forth outside to get between buildings and to meals.

Be sure and alert the ANA staff if you have respiratory concerns so they can keep in touch with you (the ANA staff is very attentive and take health concerns seriously).

    Sad situation.
It is usually very hot in late June and early July but this is an exceptionally hot year. because of the drought the landscape is dry the place is a tinderbox.. I will miss the ANA SS for work related travel reasons (first miss in years) and wish those there a great meeting despite the adversities

The Evacuation area is VERY close, I went walking only a few blocks away from the red area in past Seminars

The ANA has stated on their Facebook page that they will refund enrollment fees if people choose to cancel their attendance. So due to the smoke and ashes, all the road closures, and the uncertainty of where the fires are headed, etc., I made the very tough decision to cancel my attendance at the Summer Seminar, but I requested that my enrollment fees be rolled over to next year so as that the ANA doesn't get dinged to badly in case others cancel their attendance as well.

Also, I called Frontier Airlines to cancel my flight and they said, due to the fires, they are waiving their cancellation fee as long as you book another Frontier Airlines flight within one year of when I made my initial reservation. So if anyone else is thinking of cancelling, be sure to check with your airline to see if they will do the same.

I am very sorry that I won't be attending as I was very much looking forward to another educational, fun-filled week in Colorado!

Are the coins displayed at the ANA protected from the particulates in the air?

The fire has now consumed about 24 sq. miles, and smoke hangs over the city. Some people at the seminar have complained of respiratory difficulties. It's cloudy now, and this has caused the temperature to drop, but the winds have picked up. The fire was stopped at route 24. John Kraljevich told me that he saw some quarter-sized bits of ash that landed near this part of the city.

Hopefully the fire is restricted to the west part of I-25 and doesn't jump across.
I would think that any fire jumping east of 25 would be more manageable given
the increased access to water from residential settings
