A really cool collection just purchased. I was drooling when I saw these coins. Flew them out to PCGS for same day grading. Even Mr. Hall and Mr. Willis liked em!!!

I like both of these coins a lot, thanks for sharing. One question is the 1872 j-1181 going into private hands or will it be going up for sale somewhere?

is it reversed like that as if
someone made a die forgetting it needs to be in mirrored image at the mint?

    Teddy

The Intaglio is incuse and inverse. It is made from a master die and is what a working die would look like.

If you used this coin to make an impression in clay, it would look just like a regular coin. The mint was exper4imenting with anti counterfeiting

i wasn't aware anything like that had ever been made
so...intaglio...is the numismatic term for such inverse example then?
ok i just read up on intaglio on wickpedia...yup that would suit it fine

I would say WOW! but that would be redundant, as it has already been mentioned somewhat. lol
What a great group of coins. We hardly ever get to see such coins with good photos much less these.
Thank you for sharing, James. Even though I have a couple of Pattern Books I did not know these existed.
I guess I should read a little more, huh?

I bought that J-264 for $1000 at the Loye Lauder sale in December 1983. I regret selling it, and would consider buying it back today. Has the price changed much?

Great coins. The incuse piece should be listed under 1858, not 1860 in the Judd book as it is a master die trial for the 1858 Indian Pattern, J-208. The wreath is the 5-leaf laurel wreath used only on the patterns. The 1859 regular issue is a 6-leaf laurel wreath.

We had one featured on the cover of Longacre's Ledger on the December 2011 issue.
