I don't remember which 01-S's I have sold over the years - have three available now
and the only collectors who have bowed out of Barbers are Barberman55, InYhehWeTrust,
Tchild, Cratylus, Tombr, RLD14, and a few others who may have slipped my mind.

Have not heard that Cary was selling,
Just not collecting only Barbers. CBH's
are his new love now.

Last I heard from him he was enjoying life
and not completely immersed in coins.

That 01-S is a great looking coin. I like it a
little more than the one I have in my set.

Been way under that radar for awhile joining Larry Shapiro and keeping my head in the books working on the Summer Seminar Barber class material. Really looking forward to Summer Seminar, coins 24/7, taking a class week one and teaching in week 2 in a beautiful part of the country.

The class is a definite go, there are a couple of slots left if anyone has an interest. Believe me, once you try it you will come back. I've felt like a 12 yo kid for weeks now in anticipation. LOL

Unfortunately I was 2nd on the totum Pole as to 1st shot at his set. Many of them ended up in my collection but not the 96-S.

Vern... sweet 93-S !!!

I had an 1883 Nickel in PCGS 55 [ No Cents ] in my set
that my Grandfather pulled from circulation. It happened to
be the only 55 in the set - so - I found a nice 58 to replace
the 55 [ which now goes to my oldest 1st cousin's son
[ a Junior at Stonehill College in Massachusetts ].

I just hope he passes it down to his grandson some day !!

Here's my new 58.....

I thought long and hard about that 93-S. I actually didn't like it. It was 1 of those coins I felt it had a 50/50 chance of coming back 92 if I was submitting...just a bit too shiny for me. He also had a stratospheric offer from someone I was not willing to meet!

Come to think of it I might have passed on his 96-S as I didn't need it and didn't see much profit on a resale. I had so much going on at the time I frankly don't remember for sure. There is a good chance David Kahn bought it so you might check with him!

I understand that Charles Barber designed the liberty nickel, but the nickels just pale in comparison to "barber coinage"-as in barber dimes, quarters, and halves.

Thanks for the plug regarding the Barber dime. Actually I would be thrilled to get any AU PCGS graded 1897-O dime. I currently have two, one that's an old ANACS 58 holder which will not cross, and the second that resides in a PCGS genuine holder, a strong AU with questionable toning. My Everyman dime set (Beancounter) is complete in AU except for the Genuine 97-O which only counts as one point. OUCH.

I know of two PCGS 97-O dimes out there that would end my search, but neither owner is looking to sell or trade.

Why won't the ANACS 58 cross?

Friday I am submitting 30 more coins to PCGS .. Several are NGC and ANACS crosses ...Within that batch will be an 1897-O ANACS XF40 Half long with the 1897-S ANACS Half in XF-45 that closed on ebay Sunday night. Dave was kind enough to overnight the coins (I won the 05-O in AU50 as well from him) .. if the 97-S crosses, my VF-25 will have to go on the market.. Actually, the 97-S VF25 looks undergraded to me .. Great candidate for CAC

From everything I see on the 97-S ANACS XF-45, it would appear it should cross. I asked the seller, Dave and he said he hadn't tried. Lenny and Walt think the coin will cross based on the photos (which obviously doesn't tell the whole story). A couple other highlights include an NGC 1905-O Quarter in 45, NGC 1909-O Half in 45, NGC 1906-O Half in 53 and a slew of VF/XF Semi-Key Quarters (1895-O, 1911-S, 1912-S all in the 30-40 range and original & problem free...I think...) ..

Liz from JJT has gone through the coins with me (except for the 1897-S that has not arrived yet) and has opined on what is likely to grade/cross and what is not. The 97-O ANACS XF40 (I bought from JJT a while back), in my opinion, is not likely to cross .. a little too glossy I am afraid which is why I asked about your dime

Well, I now see who snipped me at the end of the auction on the 1905-O Half in AU 50.
I was trying to upgrade my VF 25. I sincerely wanted an XF 45 - but the AU 50 was tempting.

I sold this about a year and a half ago to someone I thought would sit on it forever - but has
since liquidated his collection ...

Yes, the 97-S will cross - no problem.

Great V nickel Mike, Strike, luster, and color. The perfect AU 58 coin for any collector.

Regarding my ANACS 58 dime. I wanted it to cross at 55-58 and my guess is that there was a bit too much evidence of circulation with a bright coin to justify the grade.

Sam, that was a very nice 97-s anacs 45. Had it watched. Not surprised where it hammered with that look.

Hello Mike and all .. Yes... I did have a heavy bid on the 1905-O .. Let's just say you would have had to nearly double the bid (slight hyperbole) to outbid it .. But I do not use EZ Snipe or any snipe program .. Just the old fashioned way.

I also felt the 97-S had an excellent chance of crossing and considering the last VF-25 CAC sold for $1100, I was willing to go to nearly the same money. The 05-O in AU (not dipped out AU especially) just does not come along that often and I felt it warranted an all out assault to tyake it down.

And to Dave, the seller, I appreciate your helping me out. Your assistance and communication are top shelf, not to mention an outstanding eye for quality coins .. I will announce the results when the coins come back from JJT

Sam - congrats on the two auction wins. I liked them both and agree with everyone else that the 97-S should cross. Good luck on the rest of your submissions.

Mike - great eye appeal on the V Nickel, to me, a vastly unappreciated series.

Joe - a couple more attempts and they'll cross your 97-O. They just want your money.

Bought this 05-O last month from Dave Kahn. It came from a very nice set owned by an astute Iowa collector. Mike, I think you bought the 04-S.

JMW - That is ONE Hell of a set of Dimes you have on the Reg. No adjective I can conjour up suffices so I will use a simple verb ... "WOW" .. Great set with incredibly gorgeous and originally toned coins. Simply awesome

Thanks Dave. Now that I have had a chance to really look at that 97-S, I think there is an excellent chance of it going to AU50. The reverse is fully lustrous with full cartwheel luster and very smooth surfaces/fields. There may be just a tad too much friction to go to AU, but compared to many PCGS AU coins, I think it looks better than many and stands a very legit chance.

Joe, great looking 95-O Dime - I like it a lot !! Now I will look at the 97-O in hand next month
when I am out in your neck of the woods. I think the coin needs to be in a Dansco in hot & humid
SW Florida to get it to look like therest of your set.

I received a nice note from ARCO [ Tyler ] and he mentioned that he just picked up a nice 1896-S
for yet another assembly of choice Halves. He's having an issue with posting images. [ Been there too ].

I hope that this image is large enough...

Up until recently, there were no 1897-S Halves graded AU 58 by PCGS.
When I was working on my collection, the best I could locate in AU condition
was an AU 53. As nice as it was ( it should have been in an AU 55 holder, IMHO )
I always was on the lookout for a coin that would either grade or cross as an AU 58.
15 years of searching only led me to my 53.

While browsing MrBreeze's collection on Heritage's site, there in all of its beauty was an
1897-S PCGS AU 58. No mention it was a POP ONE in AU 58. For all I know, it will be
consigned to the Internet only auction. Nothing special written up about it. No fan fare by
it's owner ... just simply thrown out there for someone to stumble accross.

Everyone was aghast at some of the prices realized at AU Barber Half Key Dates
( either in my sale or subsequent sales ). Many of the underbidders made mention that
the prices I realized were an aboration and they were not worth the money they sold at.

Let me set all ney-sayers straight ... For every ridiculous bid you thought bought the coin,
there was an underbidder just one increment away from the top bid.

This newly graded 1897-S is scarcer ( IMHO ) than the POP ONE 1901-S AU 58. I truly
believe there are more 01-S's out there in AU 58 that have not yet been graded.

Prediction in this coin economy - its on a roll again - the 1897-S in AU 58 will close
at $ 22,750.00 +. Amazing as this is...

Just wait until two or three deep pocketed collectors start the bidding. I know the
gentleman who bought my old 04-S in 58 will be waving his bidder paddle till his arm
is sore !! It certainly won't be an aboration when this lot closes. >>

I expect more action of the 1897-S in 58. $15K will be a fond memory when LIVE Bidding starts !!

I stand corrected - the closing price before the 17.5% Surcharge was $13,000 - no one bid on it during the live session.

Total sell price was $ 15,275. A " Bargain " ...

Dennis - I agree, I'll take the beautiful MS-64 (and Mike, it sure is a beauty), and keep the extra $10,000-15,000 every single day. Seems like the definition of a no-brainer to me.

And Darrell - thanks for the info about Cary's 96-S half last week. Dave Kahn said it was gone before the coins became available to him.

New purchase rec'd today, NGC-58. Think it'll cross?

No reason it shouldn't to me Vern looks like a perfect AU58 .. And yet another gorgeous coin you have .

What a beautiful dime Joe - amazing look - and your entire Reg Set is one after another of coins of the same ilk ... Amazing set!!

Mike - great looking 96-S mid grade .. Here is a possible relative for it:

I thought this coin would grade 30 when I submitted it 6 months ago.. Prob a nice CAC candidate ( I have still never sent anything to them) .. if all goes well, this will be replaced with the ANACS coin. I strongly feel the ANACS 97-S has a shot at AU50 after handling it for a day

I certainly see that 97s as undergraded. Maybe the two well hidden hits in the head dress would justify knocking off 5 points but that still places it as a solid 30 in my book.

And a tip of the hat to tydye for that classically crusty '92 quarter.

The AU58 1897-S half sold at Heritage last night for $13K hammer ($14,950 with buyer's fee). Less than some above anticipated, but still close to 8-9 times any price guide or previous auction results (for ANACS and NGC coins). Clearly a coin in demand for AU58 collectors, particularly since this is the only one graded by PCGS. My set includes an example in MS 67 that is a wonderful coin and percentage-wise not that much more expensive. I would rather have my example. I would not be surprised to see another one or two coins made in this grade in the not too distant future, given the high premium paid for the coin yesterday. A coin currently in MS61 could easily be cracked out and sent in as is and wind up AU58. There are a few such coins out there and there may be some collectors who have raw coins that they could submit. We shall see.
