Nice score! I just got back an 1873-CC in AU55. I was quite pleased with the grade. I bought it raw, and figured it had a really good shot at grading, but no guarantee. Now, if our hosts would just keep it up a little lomger. I have a large submission in that grades should post for any day. It has a few CC trades in it as well.

To finish off the set I need the half dollar and gold $20. The double eagle shouldn't be too hard, although finding the right one is the key. I've passed up a few so-so ones lately. The half dollar is the real key to the set. Although the $5 and $10 are probably more rare on an absolute basis, the half dollar is in my opinion the hardest one to find well preserved with good eye appeal. The only really nice ones I've seen in the past few years was an MS65 that went for almost $50k (out of my reach) and a nice but white AU58 in August of last year.
I'm very happy with the other coins except I'd like to find a nicer 25c. The coins isn't rare but like the 50c it's been hard to find them in nice condition with great eye appeal.
Would you try an 1870 cc mint set? I am working on a 1983 P mint set and currently have the nickel and the quarter at PCGS and am hoping for lightning to strike again

Wow, an 1870-CC mint set....
The gold is the challenge with this set. The half eagle and eagle are about as rare as the 78-CC in comparison, although the 70-cc eagle is thought to be a tad rarer and the price guide reflects this. The real trouble with an 1870-cc mint set is the double eagle. The 78-CC by comparison is not that hard, there are probably 300-400 extant by my estimation. On the other hand, the 70-cc $20 is quite rare, with only 35-45 known and clocks in at $275k in XF40. Given that it's a CC and first year of issue at that, those 35-45 are going be be spoken for very quickly. I took on a big challenge with the 78-CC set, figuring it would take between 2-5 years to put it together which is a test for my (lack of) patience. I'd estimate a nice 70-CC set would take upwards of 10 years to put together and deeper pockets than mine. I haven't put near as much thought into the 70-cc coins as I have the 78-cc so some of the above may not be perfectly accurate.
If one had the means and patience, it would make a very, very cool set being first year of issue for the CC mint. It's a bit less interesting to me, as there aren't as many coins - no trade dollar and no dime and of course no 20 cent piece either year. Just the silver is a much more manageable and affordable set to put together, but at that point your only looking at three coins (25c, 50c, $1) One thing I like about the 78-cc set is that it was the intersection of the winding down of all other silver denominations and the ramping up of the Morgan with the passing of the Bland-Allison act. The probable turmoil led to some interesting mintages, varieties and errors.

After seeing the coin in hand, I think coolest's photos are a bit brighter than how the coin actually looks. Maybe somewhere between my photos and his photos.
