1893 Indian Cent, strong repunched date (Snow-1)

I purchased this very pretty 1893 Indian this morning. It has a strong repunched date, and I have not seen this variety before. I do not have the Snow book handy; does anyone here have the book or know offhand whether it is Snow-1 (189/189 s) or Snow-10 (1893/1893 s)? Any information on rarity or value in this grade? I could not find a single example in the Heritage archives or anywhere online in about 30 minutes of searching, so I figure it cannot be common.

I think this one is ether an AU58+ on a bad day or an MS64 BN on a good ay, based on the seller's images. If AU58, I probably overpaid for it pretty badly, but it's a pretty coin and a dramatic RPD I have not ever seen before, so I guess I am happy to have it regardless of purchase price.

Looks like an S-1 from the attribution guide.

Thanks. This RPD must be quit scarce, as some additional searching online didn't turn up a single photo or auction result for an 1893 Snow-1. It seems that Snow-2 and Snow-6 are the most available RPDs for this date, and neither is as dramatic as this one. I am glad bought it!

I agree with realone, it's a beautiful coin and a neat RPD. I would also guess S-1 since I don't see any repunching on the 3.

Yes, it's an S-1 - here's an excerpt from Rick's Attribution Guide:

S1 1893, 189/189 (s).
Obv. 2: (LE) Bold repunching visible below the base of the digits.

The repunching is quite dramatic and should be easily
spotted. It seems to be quite scarce as very few have
been reported.

Hill 11, FND-001.{55, 30, 30, 20}.

According to Rick's guide, it means that the highest verified so far is AU55.

Thanks for the info. on the condition census! Under the Research part of Rick's website, there is a comment "MS-64RB PCGS: Ron Robertson. " So I would guess that there is an MS64 in someone's hands as well.

Nice repunched date. If the color is original, I would think it should grade MS63BN or MS64BN.

is there some type of doubling on rev shield at top of it???

Thought I would call up this old thread of mine about an Indian cent variety after reading the recent post about the 1880 Snow-1 Indian. It does look like there is something going on with the shield, which I did not notice previously. I have this coin in hand now, and I think it is AU58. With no auction data to go on, but the knowledge that this is a rare one, I guess I should send it to PCGS anyway. Do you agree?

i would definitely send it in...but take my opinion with a grain of salt because i know very little about copper. but i do know a sweet looking coin when i see one!
