Best way/dealer to maximize sale of half cent variety?

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,305 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have upgraded to a non-variety awhile ago, but went into the SDB and decided it was time to sell a few coins.

I have an 1826 PCGS AU50 that is (not on the label) a Cohen-2 (Short leaf under S) variety. I don't think these are super in demand, so I think ebay would NOT be the right spot.

I know that these are worth more than the common variety, but not sure who would be the best to contact about selling it. I "could" do the BST, but again, the demand isn't great, so it would likely sit for quite awhile.

I haven't been an EAC member for some years now, and really don't want varieties in my 1/2c collection, so it is time for this to go to a better home.

PCGS guide for the NON-variety is only $200. This should be more, but I give that as a reference and an idea that, consignment may not be the best option either. I don't know...I haven't consigned anything to a dealer before.

Locally, the shops see very little EAC coinage, particularly 1/2c. Not much demand locally, so that wouldn't be a great way either. Not for a variety.

This was purchased 8 years ago from a board member, who lived locally, and was going through some changes and selling his collection. I was happy to help him out, but now time for me to sell it.

Thoughts on who may be a good contact for this type of variety?

TIA

(please note....while I am asking for help to know where best to sell it, I have not put a picture, nor a price range, as I am honestly not trying to spam this board here with a sale....just trying to get the most info from folks on the best contact(s) to try to sell it to)

BST with a photo and price. If that does not work for you try something else.

How many coins are you looking to sell? If it’s a decent amount, Shawn Yancey comes to mind as a good option for copper varieties.

@Bochiman I'm pretty sure I know who you bought that from. Possibly a member who took a table at an Everett Coin Club show.
All of his 1/2 cents were pleasing.

Just a couple. None are more than a couple to a few hundred $$$, a piece.

Yep...pretty sure you are thinking of the right person. I went over to his house one day, when he was liquidating, and picked out just over a handful of 1/2c pieces. He was a specialist in them, I am not. I like them, and have the set, but am not one to get into all the varieties. Good guy.

Are they Unc? I may have the buyer or seller for you with no fees to sell.

No, 2 are AU-50. One VF-35. Only the one I mentioned in the OP is a harder to find, more expensive, variety.

He would probably be my first recommendation as well.

Thanks. I have purchased from Shawn, some years ago, but haven't sold to him.
I'll likely contact him for this.

    Appreciate it.

Sometimes it takes a while for the "right" buyer to come around. I have had items listed on eBay for months, and then all of a sudden there is a nibble on the line which reaped an eventual sale after some haggling. I would put it on eBay with some wiggle room included in the BIN/BO price.

@Bochiman; not a answer to your question, but an-additional question for perhaps the variety guys to answer. It sounds like sending it in to get the variety attributed would not be worth the time and effort?

I'm not sure how others view it, but, while there IS a premium for the variety, I don't find it enough of a premium, at the AU50 level (PCGS slabbed...not necessarily EAC standard), to make it worth the variety fee, the reslabbing fee, the handling fee, the postage, and the insurance.

CVM has several of those, pick the one that's closest to yours in grade/looks and list it at that price on BST for a few days...then sell it to a dealer if no one bites. Funny, they are R-3+ and Chris has 13 of them from VG to AU55.

    Thanks Shorecoll.
I did look. Closest he has, that I saw, is NGC XF45. Mine is slightly better (imho...looking at some of the key points).
