And then there were none . . . 1954 Topps Baseball Complete in PSA 4 / 5 / 6

It started on July 6, 2002 with the purchase of #28 Ray Jablonski in PSA 4, and culminated today with the addition of this card:

After nearly 16 years, with multiple "breaks", my 1954 Topps Baseball set is 100% complete in PSA 4-6:

With a set rating of 5.02, currently in 64th place, she will rest there. The set joins my 1955 Topps Baseball Set, also in PSA 4 - 6, as my only completed set registries.

After being at 246 cards for quite some time, I was able to free up the funds through sales of other cards to purchase the last 4 cards, Yogi Berra and some guys named Banks, Kaline, and finally Aaron.

The Aaron also represents the single nicest card in my collection in terms of monetary value, and I am super stoked about its eye appeal for a "4". I really never thought I would own one.

Thanks all for looking.

Congrats on the accomplishment. That Aaron RC presents much better than the grade.

That's a great set, and I love the Aaron. 4-5-6 grades can be gorgeous cards, often with flaws that are barely visible. Great accomplishment!

Great accomplishment and I agree with the other comments that your Aaron looks fantastic.

I love hearing how people put together their sets. Did you build it card by card or get some nice lots? Any self subs?

Thanks everyone for the kind words, it's why I appreciate these boards because quite frankly, no one in my life (other than my dad) could really care less about my new Aaron :#

Ghooper, I have purchased every card already graded with the exception of 7 self-submissions that I sent in under PSA's "free grading once you hit 80% on a set" special. I registered several of the team sets as well so I was able to send in 7 cards total for free. Beyond that, I have owned very few raw 1954's. It is my personal belief that a card in PSA 4-6 from the early and mid 1950's are priced nearly identical to the same card raw, so buying raw and submitting for that grade range is not a good financial decision.

Frank, I recently downgraded my 1953 Topps PSA 4/5/6 set to PSA 2 or better. I'm just over 50% on that set and will keep looking to add to it. If you've noticed, it's no coincidence that the 2 sets I have finished have (A) the lowest number of cards in them of any Topps set, and (B) don't have any Mantles :D .

I'm also tinkering with 1973 - 1975 Topps Football in PSA 8 and PSA 9, but have a LONG way to go on those, and it appears all the $3.00 examples have dried up.

ironically recently I have been toying with the idea of doing the 54 in mid psa grade and I don't really collect graded sets.

was it a bear to find the non star cards in the psa 4-6 range at a reasonable price?

Congrats on a great set! I really like your Aaron. It's a very colorful set indeed and looks great together!

It's funny why I pursue the sets I do, mainly because I happened to get a Koufax, then a Killebrew years ago, it made me go for a Clemente and that's why one of the sets I pursue is '55 Topps. Had somehow I decided on splurging towards a '54 Aaron back then, I feel I'd probably be in about the same level of completeness on '54 Topps, but probably never would have started the '55s.

Great job on your super colorful set, again!

Very nice! A great choice of set to collect. I am currently working on the set ungraded in lower to mid grade. I did get the Aaron, Banks and Kaline rookies in PSA grades (ranging from 2 to 3). You have a really nice Aaron rookie card there!

    Hi Fred,

It is my experience that as the # of ebay auctions has dwindled compared to buy-it-nows, and as the price of PSA grading has gone up, it has been a bit harder to find affordable commons in the PSA 4-6 range. However, with patience, it is definitely possible. One of the things I really enjoy about collecting 1950's cards in this grade range is that nobody really submits these cards expecting 4's or 5's (at least on the commons), as most will not bring back the grading fees. What that means is that most of these cards were sent in hoping for 7's and 8's, thus the cards look pretty darn nice and most of the flaws are not so obvious. Also, I don't think there's a huge demand for PSA 4-6 commons from these years, so a lot of times you will see sellers eventually give in and, relatively speaking, try to dump them.
