SOLD

This high relief bronze medal was created by collaboration of iconic American sculptors / U.S. Mint engravers Augustus St. Gaudens and Charles E. Barber, to commemorate the 400th Anniversary of the Landing of Columbus. It is believed by the seller that these were produced at the U.S. Mint Exhibit at the World's Columbian Exhibition, for use as merit awards to many exhibitors. This particular medal awarded to the Brockport (N.Y.) Union Agricultural Society.
This large medal is 67mm diameter and 5.5 mm thick, and weighs 7.15 ounces.
The Brockport Union Agricultural Society was organized in October 1859, with the Honorable E.B. Holmes serving as President, H.N. Beach as Secretary, and Thomas Cornes as Treasurer. (Beach also had an international presence, serving as US Consul to Mexico, Ecuador, and Venezuela during the 1880's). The organization leased sixteen acres of land in the Southeast part of town for 10 years, and constructed one of the finest half mile horse racing tracks in New York State. At the expiration of the lease, being unable to secure an extension by the landowners, or to purchase the property, it was disbanded, which took place in October 1869. The organization continued to remain active in promoting new agricultural implements and techniques until the early 1900's.
. I will consider reasonable trade offers of Capped Bust or Liberty Seated type coins.
