This one hurt. I had hoped to get it for about 3/4th the final price, but it was not meant to be.

For those who do not know, this type comes very poorly made. This specimen has been given high marks by NAC, Varesi, CNG and NGC.

Lot 31176:

Milan. Carlo III Filippo 1707 MS63 NGC, KM121, Dav-1380. An incredibly wholesome piece, featuring the typical crudely produced flan and rougher style. The toning has acquired a charming old time feel, and some underlying luster peeks through from beneath. Scarcely encountered this attractive and presentable.
Ex. Varesi 69 (10/2016), lot 1292
Ex. NAC 30 (4/2005), lot 881

It was also in Triton XXI (January, 2018), lot 1078, where it hammered at $3200 on an estimate of $4000:

ITALY, Milano (Duchi). Carlo III di Spagna (Carlo VI, Sacro Romano Impero). 1706-1740. AR Filippo (42mm, 27.76 g, 4h). Dated 1707. Armored bust right / MIR 398/1; Crippa 1; KM (DAV) 1380. Superb EF, toned. well struck.

Ex ANPB Collection (Varesi 69, 7 October 2016), lot 1292; Numismatica Ars Classica 30 (4 June 2005), lot 881.

Here is the Varesi description, from Numisbids (apologies for the weird characters, but that's not my doing), realizing €4250:

Carlo VI (giˆ III) dÕAsburgo. Primo periodo: Re di Spagna Duca di Milano (1702-1711) Filippo 1707, argento gr. 27,76, ¿ 42,1 mm. . MIR 398/1, Crippa 1, CNI 2, Davenport 1380. Molto rara.
SPL/q.FDC

From Numismatica Ars Classica 30 (4 June 2005), lot 881, where it realized €4000:

Estimate: EUR 4500
d=42 mm
Carlo III d'Asburgo, VI Imperatore (1702-1711). Filippo 1707.

Very attractive piece EVP. Interesting to see the crude planchets and strikes persisted will into the 18th century. I wonder what the backstory is with regards to the Milan mint.

    Short version: they suck.

Less short version: just like with the “outer” Habsburg mints being of lesser workmanship, same for Spanish Minor and Spanish Americas.

Looking at its price history, it looks like I'll be happy if I break even when I sell it. But, I expect this coin to be a keeper piece until it comes time for my estate (my wife?) to sell it.

Very nice! To me, the coinage of Milan in the second half of the 15th century was some of the best in all of Italy at the time. It's interesting that the mint quality declined so much under Spanish rule.

A neat piece! I always appreciate learning a little more about challenges of collecting particular issues.
I also know how good it can feel to finally land a white whale. Congrats EVP! :)

Very nice coin. It looks pretty rare coin so you have to pay good price for it. The first one is highest grade by ngc so I don’t think the price is high

Finally got around to making a nice image, using the coin image from the Varesi auction. I will be writing my auction tag soon too. Busy morning of doing some much needed coin stuff: images, writing tags, and updating my inventory records.
