Rookie cards

I'm a long time RC (vintage) collector. I have recently shifted more focus to the modern era. How do you guys determine a player's true rookie card? First year available or rookie year?
The over production (or quick-to-produce) has caused mass confusion for us die-hards.
I opted for the 2000 Topps Chr. Traded Cabrera.
My SOP has me search for 1st year available, most desirable, traditional card company, but not necessarily most expensive.
Thanks in advance.
Happy collecting!

Most of the newer cards from Bowman and Topps have the RC logo on them and are considered their actual rookie cards. Their Bowman cards from previous years are usually part of the Draft/Prospect subsets and won't have the logos and are considered prospect cards. The ones that say "1st Bowman or 1st Bowman Chrome Card" are usually the most valuable and sought after of their prospect cards, especially the autographed ones.

I will say I'm not so much into the new shiny stuff, so my current knowledge is limited. But it seems that for 2017 Topps there are several cards of Aaron Judge and each one says RC on it. So what's his true RC for 2017 Topps?
This is his base Topps rookie card. This also applies to his base Topps Chrome (same pic but different number).
