New to the forum Celtics collector

Hi Guys, I’ve been a viewer on these forums for quite some time and thought it might finally be the time to join.

I’m from Adelaide, Australia and make the trip each year for the National.

I’ve collected cards for 25 years and been a Celtics fan that entire time. I started off collecting Larry Bird, then other RC players in the 90s who became busts then onto Antoine Walker, Paul Pierce and now Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Because it’s my team I follow every game, check the box scores, it’s nice to know how your players are doing and watching them when you have thousands invested in their cards.

That being said a few years ago at The National I bought a few vintage cards. They had never interested me before but all the endless parallels and 1000 cards a year for some players just got tiring so I picked up a few vintage graded singles. At first I had no intention to have high grades or complete team sets but like anything collecting the longer your in it the more your collecting evolves. I spent a hundred here and there but was in shock at what the big grades were going for. Fast forward to today and I’m working on all the Celtics team sets from 1957-1988. I have the number 1 on a few and I’ve spent small fortunes on some older high grades with my goal to one day own the most perfect example of all of them.....

I was born in 1984, I never saw any of these players live nor was I alive for most of their careers but I get a lot of enjoyment out of these cards being a Celtics fan. I can watch highlights on YouTube of their games and study their careers.

As time goes on there will always be new collectors taking over and they don’t necessarily need to have been around when the items were made. All these new variations and manufactured scarcity I think are pushing a lot of people to the vintage cards as a more attainable and stable collecting investment.

I think the gap for the high grades and good eye appeal will only continue to widen as like anything in life people want the best if they can afford it. Some guys won’t even look at bidding on a 9 if they know there are 10s out there even if they are 20x the price.

My handle on the PSA registry is “ozceltics”

Here are some photo’s of my collection of game used Celtics jerseys and card collection.

    Hiya Oz

    What's your first name.

    That's not a collection buddy - it's a museum!

I'm really liking how you have it set up - is that a basement?

Those are some of the nicest 61F's I've ever seen.

    Thanx for sharing.

If you're planning another trip this year to the National - let us know - we have a gathering point at BBCEx - would be happy to meet you.

Magnificent. The beginning of the Boston dynasty was built on the St Louis Hawks preference for Cliff Hagen and Bill McCauley over Bill Russell

My name is Matt, we don’t really have basements in Aus but it’s the downstairs area of my house. Billiard table, bar, memorabilia collection then I have a separate room dedicated as my “card room”. No windows or light, lockable door and an air purifier going....

I’ve nearly got all the 61 Fleer in PSA 9, Russell’s highest grade is 9 and most other players only have 1-2 in a 10 and are in the most part locked away and in other registry sets!

Is a nice enough place but we are often forgotten about with the other capital cities! When you love cards and the hobby it’s a great trip to do.

I wish! Michaels collection is incredible and unfortunately he has alot of high grades which will likely never be repeated. !

I do have a couple of cards he doesn’t though, it’s no Bill Russell but this is a Pop 1

Also this Pop 2 Jo Jo

Always good to have more NBA fans here. I'm majorly jealous..not of the cards or jerseys, but of the NBA Jam arcade game!

How did you pick the Celtics? Not like they are a local team to you which is what most US collectors gravitate to it seems.

It most certainly is, I’ve collected Walker since 1997. That’s actually a banner that was hanging outside of the TD Garden during the 2002 Playoffs.

My Walker collection is fully online:

Good stuff! I remember ripping a ton of packs at the time trying to get the Lucky 13 & Topps Draft Redemption for both Walker then Pierce. Thank god for ebay ;)

    Welcome to the boards.

Used to attend the Celtics end-of-summer basketball camp in Marshfield, MA in the 1970s and managed to get a few autographs from the greats of that era. Think I still have a sports encyclopedia with a "jacket" that has several of those autographs on one of my bookshelves. Haven't looked at it in years, but you have inspired me.

Just think, if you would have pooled your resources over the years into Chiefs cards and memorabilia, you would of had a collection worth tens of dollars!!! :D

That's an awesome collection, thank's for sharing. Gotta know, does the NBA Jam arcade game still work?
