Baseball card "type" set?

Over in the coin world, people put together a coin type set - one of each kind of coin minted. Has anyone tried this with baseball cards? Probably easy up until 1985 or so, then gets a bit crazy into the 90s.

I am a set collector myself, but Dave Hornish, who used to and may occasionally still post here as topcat, and who is active on Net 54, is a post war type collector. He has an excellent, !illustrated Topps blog at toppsarchives.blogspot.com. To do a full type collection of, for instance, all post war sets listed in SCD or Beckett's would be extremely challenging. Never ending and virtually impossible if you added in all pre war sets so listed

    Topps Baseball-1948, 1951 to 2017
    Bowman Baseball -1948-1955
    Fleer Baseball-1923, 1959-2007

I'm not thinking whole sets, just one card from each year from each company.

I think that's what Al aka Bishop was saying.

E.g. if we go post-war and focus on Bowman, then "all" Topps (1 card per yr/set), go into the multitude of sets that came out to include Donruss, Fleer, Upper Deck, etc.

And keep in mind, Topps came out with all kinds of sets running up to 2018 - even if one picked "1" card - the task would be monumental!

And let's make it more fun:

let's try to concentrate on "one" team - and "one" player - time frame permitting - from 1948 to 2018.

    Good question buddy!

You'd also have to decide whether to include things like Drake's / Hostess cards, etc. Like you've said, could grow big in a hurry.

Thanx - was gonna mention that afterward.

Think of all the "premium" sets, indy sets....

I was actually thinking of the type set concept the other day. It works great for coins. For baseball cards, even a base card (basic) type set is fairly extensive.

If you are working on a basic set for any player, you essentially are working on a type set. There are about 220 cards in Griffey’s basic set from 1989 to 2010. You could look at a popular player who retired around 1989 and look back to get another chunk of years to see what the overall count would be.

If you stick to the basic set cards it may be doable. I would not want to stray away from the basic cards only... would be a fun set!

I'm having a blast putting together a pre-WW2 type set for my favorite team - the White Sox. I think I have over 180 different examples so far, with a couple more currently at the graders across the street. I have a link to my set at Collector Focus in my sigline (if anyone is interested in checking it out :) ).

Nice collection. With the 100th anniversary of the 1919 WS around the corner you probably will see some obscure type cards show up at auction houses.
