Sold an item on Ebay, it's delayed in transit, how long until I have to give refund?

Hey guys, been a long time since I've been on.
Just had a quick question regarding a card I sold on Ebay.
I sold the item on March 12, after it's departure from post office the tracking status says "In transit, delayed". Looks like the last scan date of the card was March 16.
I'd just like to know when I'm required to give a refund to the buyer? I should note that the buyer has not contacted me, I have actually contacted them letting them know the status and apologizing for the delay.
Any info would be great.
Thanks.

I would wait a few more days. It will show up and get back on track for it's delivery. Tell the buyer to be patient. This happens sometimes.

go to the usps web sight, on the far right there is a help tab, roll over that and go to missing mail, they will help you find your package

As far as the actual requirement by eBay I'm not really sure what that is, but his is what I did the one time it happened to me.

If you do decide to refund the buyer,i would redirect the package first back to you so he doesn't end up with your refund & card.

    Thanks guys!

  • USPS has been having delay issues since around Thanksgiving. I started a thread about this a couple months ago too. I had multiple shipments to me that had "In transit - delayed" for over a week with no updates in between the departure facility and the regional hub. They finally got here 10-15 days after being shipped when they should have taken 3-6 max. I've been told the crazy weather is part of the problem.

I actively collect Kirby Puckett. I have collections of Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, Roberto Clemente, Dwight Gooden, Tom Seaver, Errict Rhett and Evan Longoria.

I get at least 1 in 5 packages delayed In transit, and even stop scanning for a day or two, then magically show up near its destination.

last year I had a card "lost" in transit after scanning at a local sort facility. after a few days, I was able to go to my local post office and they were able to notify the sort facility. apparently when this occurs, they have someone scour the whole place for the package. nine times out of ten, it falls off a conveyor belt and is able to be located. later that afternoon, the package was scanned and resumed transit and delivered the next day.

If I were you, I would contact your local PO in person and see if they can contact the last facility it was scanned in. also, you can file a lost package search on the USPS website. my local office states they have never seen a missing package not find its way eventually after a search has been initiated.

Thanks for advice everyone. I just checked the second item that I sent out a few days ago and it's currently in the wrong state...lol. The first package still says "in transit, delayed". I'll probably talk to the guys at the po. Thanks again.
