1976 Topps basketball rippage

I've been itching to rip something and I've got four packs of 76 Topps basketball that can hopefully fill some holes in my raw set, or at least provide some upgrades. One of the packs may be suspect, so it's a goner (only one way to find out)... the other three have small holes where price stickers were removed (last pic below), so they're goners too. In honor of the NCAA Tourney opening weekend, I'm going to open one pack each night and post the results.

First pack didn't have much star power, unless you're a Zen Master fan. Soft corners on a few in this pack, but centering is pretty good and print quality is excellent. A lot of the specs you'll see are on my scanner, the blacks on these are snow free. Here's the best four cards out of the first pack, including the Phil Jackson...

Any chance I could trade you for one of the empty packs, even with the damage? I already have the complete set but I've never opened a pack, and thus I don't have one for my archive. I have thousands upon thousands of cards available to trade so I may have something you're after.

Those are beauties for '76. Here's hoping for a minty Dr. J!

Pretty nice looking cards. Some good threads on here lately.

I have seen a lot of these broke recently watching vintage breaks. They have been unbelievable sharp and these packs intrigue me, but the set seems much tougher than the population present. These come off-cut and with print dots often. How did so many hit upper tier of pop?

1970's basketball is very underrated. Good luck, would love to see a minty Lloyd "World B" Free, David Thompson or Gus Williams for rookies.

Agree totally about 70's basketball being underrated. Good luck finishing the rip.

Sorry for the delay, crazy night after that loss by Virginia!

I definitely agree with the comments on 70s basketball, I'd even include 80 and 81 thanks to Bird and Magic. That being said, 2nd pack and 3rd pack have been ripped... but with one caveat, the suspect pack was indeed fake and nothing worthy of showing. With that, I have quite a few packs from this year, so I'm going to find a replacement pack to rip. Nothing exciting in the good pack... again, print quality on these cards is extremely nice:

Well, the final pack with a hole provided much more excitement... and disappointment. Star power was phenomenal, but the entire pack had a dinged top right corner. Gonna try and dig out the other pack tonight to complete the rippage.

    A super John sighting.

Didn't realize that Jerry Sloan had been a player. Plus now we know Phil Jackson was really in shape - figured him for more your typical soft body white guy of the 60's & 70's

Always looking for 1993-1999 Baseball Finest Refractors and1994 Football Finest Refractors.

    Ugh, why, pack gods? WHY!?!?

You did pull Kareem and Dr. J AS though. That's better than opening a pack with dinged corners full of nobodys. Those cards still have value. Thanks for sharing the rip with us. Despite the corner it was a lot of fun.

Revisiting this thread, my other packs from this issue were not at my house... so I had to go fish one out of my alternate storage. This is the pack that will be getting ripped tonight:

  • If the card showing on back is who I think it is, you should be very pleased with the results!

Do you know the sequence on 76 topps basketball? Looks like Walt Frazier on back fwiw.

I will be ripping this one without the kids, so probably 9:30 or 10ish. Stay tuned.

Well, star power was present with two HOF'ers. A second year of one and a rookie of the other:

Unfortunately (again) the luck wasn't just good. The gum leached all the way through the last card and caused staining on the back of the Thompson RC:

Other than the stain, it's a really nice card... few print issues, but nothing too unsightly. The Malone is nice too, but does have two surface bubbles that would keep it from ever being worthy of grading. But a few nice additions to my set!

As an NC State fan I love seeing a Skywalker sighting gum stain or not!

Love the ad for NHL trash cans on the back of the pack.

Favorite card from this pack is still the Dwight Jones. I’d kill for a head of hair like that.

My favorite set from the 70's!! Bought several sets from Mr. Mint
and Georgia Music around 86-87. Put together 4 awesome sets,
sold the rest. I wish I had bought the un-opened box at the
Chicago National in the early 90's. Really good memories!!

    Thanx for the rip.

Too bad about the dings - I like the Dr J action card. The Kareem looks pretty good.

    One thing I found interesting?

They didn't update their copyright on the cards or wrappers.

    Why, Gum?! WHY?!?!

Moses and a Thompson rookie. Should have been such a juicy pack. And for what? Gum? What flavor is it anyway? Crap? Nobody likes you, Gum!

I've still got one of those NHL trash cans from when I was a kid.
