PSA Sample Cards

Not wanting to clutter up jordangretzkyfan's rip thread, Stone193 had posted a PSA Sample card and there were a few comments. Here are the Samples I've acquired, feel free to add yours as well.

I have no idea the original source of these, but when begsu1013 offered them I had to pick them up. I'm not sure how many generations of flips these Sample holders are available for, but would be interesting to see what everyone has.

    Hiya Kyle

Those are really nice - I noticed with the first 2 that the cert #'s are not in the database.

    I'll put mine here too:

Here's my info: as you can see the number "was" used for a real card - what's this mean? Nothing - was just curious.

    ITEM INFORMATION
    Certification Number 05000005
    Reverse Cert Number/Barcode No
    Year 1972
    Brand TOPPS
    Sport BASEBALL CARDS
    Card Number 187
    Player GATES BROWN
    Variety/Pedigree
    Grade NM 7
    SMR Price Guide Value $3

I don't find any of the 3 in the cert verify database. Kinda odd they would reuse a cert # from a sample.

This was back in 1992 and they probably didn't think anything of it?

  • Dumb question: Why do the slabs that LarkinCollector has look like modern PSA holders with modern cert #'s while Stone's obviously looks like its from the early 1990's? Did PSA simply agree to re-slabbed them at some point 20+ years later? That makes sense... except for the cert #'s. Kind of weird that they would have "randomly invented" those cert #'s in 1992.

I actively collect Kirby Puckett. I have collections of Michael Jordan, Emmitt Smith, Roberto Clemente, Dwight Gooden, Tom Seaver, Errict Rhett and Evan Longoria.

    Actually good question Jimmy.

    Not sure. Guess?

Right hand didn't know what the other was doing around 1992 or so - they printed out that cert # on the (Sample) 89T Murphy - not stopping it from being used in the actual grading process?

The ones Kyle has may have been done when they had a "holder/flip" change? And was handing them out somewhere?

I'm guessing my samples were done years later, probably to show off changes to the flip.

  • I just did a google image search for "PSA sample holder" and "PSA sample slab" and got several "odd" things.

These are what I would expect a "sample" to look like - no cert#. Didn't come across any that look like the ones posted here. Have you guys seen others with the cert#'s on them like the ones you have?

  • I'm wondering if there are Kirby's out there that I might want; never seen these before. Want to know what I am buying before I do.

Looks like all the ones without cert #s are 2001 or newer cards. These were handed out as samples at a trade show, but actually have numeric grades also (all PSA 8): https://www.ebay.com/itm/1988-DEVON-WHITE-DONRUSS-283-HAWAII-TRADE-SHOW-BUYBACK-PSA-8/172448224675

I haven't seen others with cert #s, but can't say I've focused at all on finding PSA Sample slabs. It would be nice if we could compile the info and align samples with the various generations of PSA flips.
