The Other #311's

Stone193Stone193 Posts: 24,407 ✭✭✭✭✭

We hear so much about Mantle's #311 - I started pondering...

And....here we go:

#311 is the 11th three-digit “prime” number for which the sum of the squares of its digits is also a prime number.

Mickey Mantle’s FTC #311 - if we add up the values of M-I-C-K-E-Y…
(where A=1…Z=26) - we get 131 - “another” prime number which “also” contains the “same” digits as his FTC number - 311! Wow!

The FCC set aside the “prime” number 311, a telephone code now used in many US cities for connection to the police non-emergency (how the band 311 got its name - in their city - #311 is 'code' for public nudity)

Apartment number 311 is the first door to be knocked on in the movie Ace Ventura: Pet Detective.

311 is the lesser of the first occurrence of a “twin prime” (311, 313) such that the sets of digits of both primes are equal.

Timothy Leary claimed to had taken LSD a total of “311” times.

There’s more but I need to move on to what I was "pondering."

On to Topps and #311

BTW, if you've never thought about this? You're normal.

I was wondering who else got “assigned” this ignominious “prime number?”

Took me a bit of time to compile:

I met Leary once, what an interesting guy. LSD 311 times, seemed a bit more than that in person. I can’t wait for retirement!!!

311 is a band that formed in Omaha, Nebraska, which was also home to Mantle's Yankee teammate and roommate Bob Cerv.

A random tidbit to add ... Larkin was #311 in 3 different sets (not counting parallels): 1989 Bowman, 1993 Leaf, & 2001 Fleer Platinum. Perhaps the most of any player? No idea how one would research this.

I knew all about 3 11 3 days ago. BTW, may be time to get a part time job. :)

John Lennon was quoted once as saying he "dropped" at least 1000 times. This is widely disputed.

Cool research. I love oddball trivia. Lot of research required for this, how long did that take? Wouldn't it be mind blowing if it took 311 minutes?

Nice investigating work Mike...fun facts! We should have known that Jerry Grote would somehow be tied to this. Based on the majority of players to share 311, Topps should’ve retired this number many many years ago.

The duration of this video, in which a '52 wax pack is ripped is...you guessed it....3:11...

Thanx for the nice words guys!

The checklists are easy to access on a web called "Keyman" - I could only hope someone would think it might have taken 311 minutes to research.

    Hi everyone

This may be arguably the finest and most iconic card in the hobby?

Yes. Some would say the T206 Wagner or the 1916 Ruth Sporting News?

Well, anyways, it's time to update the list of who gets the honor to share the iconic #311.

    19T - Jake Bauers RC (3 yrs, SEA, .215BA)
    20T - David Bote RC (4 yrs, CHC, .233BA)
    21T - Codi Heuer RC (2 yrs, CHW, 7-1W/L)

Ya never know when someone is gonna ask?

Interesting that there's no 311 Area Code - in deference to Mantle?

Beautiful card. There was one of these in the Mr. Mint find that was even better centered. DEAD-centered, left to right, top to bottom, both the front and the back. AND the framing was perfectly plumb. Only one that I saw like that, out of the 66 or so of them in the find, and if I remember correctly, Al kept that one aside; it was not offered as a single, or as part of a #311 to #407 run, each run bricked and held by a $10,000 black $100 bill wrapper.

What are the components of that case worth now?

  • Mo_MentumMo_Mentum Posts: 167 ✭✭✭

Interesting to note, that the #311s from the find were being wholesaled at $2000 for not centered (I don't want to say off-center as none that I can remember were what qualifies now for OC), and $2500 for the nicely centered ones. Also of note, of the two types of #311s (two per sheet, a double print), one of them had the tendency to be better centered.

If I'm not mistaken, the bricked runs, #311 through #407 were being wholesaled at $10,500.

My 2nd son was born on 3-11

And he was born in 2008.
    11-3=8

Side note: he was born precisely at 4pm and on that day the stock market DOW experienced its 5th highest point gain in history (up until that point in history).

He has lived up to the billing (so far) in that he’s completely awesome. FYI.

I feel like Topps had a chance to do more with #311 in the 2001 Heritage set. Not sure what player they could have assigned to #311, maybe Jeter, but certainly they could have done better than Doug Glanville :-).
