Rewarding Complete Sets

Just a thought. Do you think it would be worth while for PCGS to give a certificate of accomplishment to collectors who reach 100% complete in a set?

I can think of a few pro's and con's, but I'll wait to post them later.

I think complete sets should carry more weight or possibly be in a different category than partial ones. (of course I say this because mine is complete and there is a set above me with only 4 out of the 5 coins)image

The only thing certificates do is encourage dealers to charge more to the "competitive" people, and encourage people to sell their sets on ebay for more than they are really worth.

    i can see it now

Item #345678 All time Reg Set #6 WITH PCGS Certificate, current bid 4000$

gimmie a break.... it wont do any good.

How about if you complete a set PCGS sends you a get 1 coin upgraded from a 69 to a 70 card...
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

Buyers pay what they want to. No dealer that I know of holds a gun to a buyer's head an says, you've got to buy this coin at my outragious price. Buyer's can walk away from any deal if they dont like the price. Supply and demand alone control the price of coins. I'm saying this as a collector.

I'm not talking about influencing the market here. People buy coins, not certificates of accomplishment. And I find it hard to believe that anyone would pay more for a $10,000 set of coins just because it came with a certificate of accomplishment with someone else's name on it.

PCGS were to offer such commendations (which they havent) and I got one, you could be sure it wouldnt ever be for sell. The coins, sure... but the certificate would stay with me for life.

I'm not even talking about having the set ranking on it. I'd think the owner's name, the set name, and a nice statement saying that you completed the set 100% with PCGS coins would be plenty.

I just thought it would be a nice jesture of PCGS to have something like this. It wouldnt cost much, and to pure collectors, it would have great (non monitary) value.

I think it would be a nice gesture. In today's world of very inexpensive publishing and letter generation, an 8x11 certificate or a nice letter from the collector's club would be a nice touch. I can't see a certificate or letter being "sold" with a set on EBay, and like you David, it would be something I would keep until . . .?

Although I have complained recently on this board about Heritage, I do have something positive to say in this regard. When I have bought a "true" auction item from them in recent months, they include a nice glossy "certificate" with a photo of the coin which entitles me to consign this same coin to them in a future auction for free. Presently, I'm not talking about the free consignment part, rather the ease of which they can produce a glossy 8x11 certificate for each coin I have purchased through auction. It is a nice touch.

A PCGS letter or certificate congratulating me on completion of a series would be a nice touch as well. Their PR department should take note.

How about a proof set minimum 69dcam the year you complete the set or a SAE slabbed for the year you complete. After all of the money we send them a "token" of their appreciation for us would be a nice gesture.

For me the real prize is the complete set (IMHO)
